This will be the second part of my contribution to
womenlovefest, and this time it'll be dedicated to the brilliant Gwen Cooper.
I was going to start it in a completely different way, but then I read
upupa_epops's Donna entry and it kinda inspired me to do something similar. I was also going to leave this for my last post for Gwen, but then again, it can just as well begin this fest.
There's one thing I always meant to ask Jack. Back in the old days. I wanted to know about that Doctor of his. The man who appears out of nowhere and saves the world. Except sometimes, he doesn't. All those times in history, when there was no sign of him, I wanted to know why not. But I don't need to ask anymore. I know the answer now. Sometimes the Doctor must look at this planet and turn away in shame. I am recording this in case anyone ever finds it. So you can see... you can see how the world ended.
Children of Earth, episode 5
If I didn't love Gwen before, that would be the moment when I suddenly see the light and instantly fall in love with her.
Ever since I started watching Torchwood (and it was after the first four seasons of the new Who, which changed my fandom heart forever) I've been lookin out for any mentions of the Doctor. And just like Gwen, so many times I asked myself the question: why isn't the Doctor here? Is he on the other side of the Universe, saving some other worlds? Is he unreachable once again?
But Gwen isn't looking for any execuses. She may or may not be right (I'd like to believe that she isn't, but at the same time I know that's completeley naive), but it's probably the most objective opinion on the Doctor that we could ever get (could anyone that ever really knew the Doctor be objective about him?).
Gwen doesn't understand Jack when he's waiting for his Doctor, because no one has ever come and saved the day for her. She knows that if she doesn't get herself together and start doing something, just anything, then no miracle, no mysterious blue box will appear out of nowhere to heroically solve all the world's problems.
Gwen Cooper is a doer and I believe she's exacly the person that Jack needed, when the Doctor didn't appear, again.
