End of Week 5 Write-a-thon Word Count: 5400

Last week I wrote scenes for the beginning, middle and end of the novel. Still making progress though.

A bit of unedited wordage from somewhere near the beginning:

They climbed the zig-zag steps to the lookout where, on a clear day, they could see over the mishmash of older quarter rooftops, past The Edge and on to the fermenting waters of Rollmouth. Today, a surly fog obscured most of it; but now and then Ju could see the outlines of the port, the spindly arms of its stevedores bending over freighters as if in prayer.

The hilltop was deserted. They found a sheltered seat beneath a stand of beech trees where they could still see the city.

“It’s not the prettiest sight in Nir,” Arvin said. “But there’s something absurdly majestic about it.”

“I suppose. Now we’re far enough from the shadow of its stink.”

Arvin pointed through the fog, towards the mansions of Upper Slik. “The stench over there is as bad as anywhere if you're canny enough to find it.”

Ju looked at him oddly.

“It’s where I’m from.” He made a cynical noise in the back of his throat. “Filthy rich, all of them, my parents included. They own shares in the Urstone mines. Make their profits on the deaths of miners.”
