Press Kit for Only Lovers Left Alive

Contrary to many others on LJ I am not yet tired of vampires and zombies yet, although we have been flooded with tv-shows and movies in the recent years. While some of the zombie movies were very good, like 28 Days Later, Simon Pegg's Shawn Of The Dead or Zombieland, the only vampire-related movie that comes to my mind is the unfortunate Twilight ( Read more... )

lol. I was never a horror fan, even as a kid. I grew up on books, mostly. I had my shows, but I don't remember watching a lot of tv as a kid. I liked mysteries and the fantastical, but monsters in and of themselves didn't really interest me.
I have always liked a good, well-planned, original tale - regardless of medium, and that's probably what bothers me about this genre. It was cliche before I was born.
Your emo reference is just perfect to describe that. So, the writer needs to change the formula, but change it too much, and it loses its identity and is just as lame as it is if you follow the formula too closely. So, putting together a successful vamp/zombie/wolf/etc story is like a tightrope act with lots of traps to fall into along the way and no net. I just haven't seen many stories that managed to maintain that delicate balance.
Interview is the only film I remember liking, but there have been a few tv series to play with the theme that I have enjoyed: Buffy (in spite of myself), and the short-lived Moonlight come to mind.

I should also probably point out that I watched Interview before I read the book.

I do think the music that could work well for the genre exists, but it hasn't breached its way into popular media. Bu,t you are right that music that is currently easily accessible and expected is a joke for this type of soundtrack. It's a shame, because as a music fanatic, the soundtrack can (and often does) make a break a movie for me. I can think of several films that have been ruined for me by a bad musical choice on a climactic scene.

The blending of all the elements has to be near perfect for me to enjoy a film in the genre. Harsh critic, maybe, but still true. So, I think I shy away from it all as a general rule. I've given it plenty of undeserved chances at this point, I think.
