Musical Advent Calendar: Day Nineteen

Dec 19, 2010 10:53

So a few days ago there was a discussion in the comments section of one of the advent calendar posts, in which some of you expressed that you actually enjoy the traditional stuff. Usually I avoid it because again, this is not the mall, but occasionally I manage to sneak in a song or carol that's a traditional part of my Christmas experience, like ( Read more... )

I found out today that I've been singing the wrong lyric to a verse in 12 Days of Xmas for decades- it's "Four Colly/Collie birds" not "four calling birds". I am gobsmacked!

Fact: I have always hated that song.

Also, roving mall carolers REALLY don't like being offered a dollar to "even things up with a few verses of AVE SATANI" :)

Pssst. You are the Christmas Music Guru on my flist, and I don't know if you're picky about what you have, or if you just collect everything... point is, both my favorite bands released Christmas albums this year, and if you don't have them, I'll gladly send 'em over. The Indigo Girls one is a nice mix of traditional, original, and covers -- and the Carbon Leaf one is entirely original. Let me know!

I *do* collect everything, pretty much, though only by artists I enjoy, generally speaking. I happen to enjoy both Indigo Girls AND Carbon Leaf very much (I hope you're feeling better after your fall, speaking of!) and I've been meaning to get the Indigo Girls album, but by the time I heard about it this year's songs were already picked out, so I thought I'd save them for next year. I am *always* looking for Hanukkah songs, and they came through for me for next year. Yay!

I didn't even know Carbon Leaf had put out a Christmas CD, which makes me a terrible fan, but I'd love to hear it! So the answer is yes, I would be happy to take advantage of your generosity! Thanks very much!

Hah! Yeah, I have a bruised leg and a super-bruised ego, but I'm fine. Thanks. :)

And hey, nobody knew that CL had put out a Christmas album. The thing about them forming their own record label is that now they have NO PUBLICITY WHATSOEVER. It's annoying, but whatever.

What's your email address? I'll SendSpace the albums your way!

Thank you! You're the best. I need to pay more attention to CL and their label. There's another huge CL fan on my friends list as well, I should hear about these things!

You know I love me a Johnny Mathis Christmas! And I love Ella on White Christmas! These are great versions of traditional songs.

I am sending happy sewing thoughts your way in hopes that you have no machine issues (which always crop up for me when I have NO time for them!)and your costumes come out awesome!

Wish me luck, I'm heading out to get ready for the annual Christmas Play I run/direct each year that is tonight. Thirty-two kids in this years show. Nine musical numbers, sixteen kids with speaking roles. Let's hope for no pukers!!!!

Dude, you did not tell me that you're actually Will Schuester! Also, you're far braver than I. I hope it went off without a hitch! I'm sure it was great either way.

My sewing machine was actually last year's Christmas gift; it's a Viking workhorse, unlike my sad old Brother, on which I never would have attempted these costumes because I would have been in tears by now. So fingers crossed the new sewing machine will keep up with me just fine. So far so good!

I can't really rock the sweater vest like Will can, but it all went wonderfully.

The kids I work with are younger, in this years group the youngest was three and the oldest thirteen. The little ones are always cute and frustratingly distracted and my wisemen (or is it wiseguys!?!) always provide the comic relief, but this year no one forgot their lines and no one threw up, so I say: SUCCESS!!!

Oh, a viking...is it OK to have sewing machine envy?

I'm still using an ancient Singer I bought refurbished, like twenty years ago (fuck, I sound old). I keep thinking of replacing it, for a new model that does all the cool things the new machines do, but I seem unneccessarily attached to it, and I just don't sew enough anymore to justify it. I'm still jealous though (I'm petty like that!)

I also own an old Singer, given to me by a coworker whose eyesight is not good enough for sewing anymore. It was her mother's, and she's 66 this year, so it's pretty old. I cherish it based on the fact that she gave it to me, but my Viking beats it hands down for usability, of course.

It's okay, my cat threw up again so your kids wouldn't have to! (Glad to hear it went off without a hitch.)
