I declare it Comment Fic Wednesday

It is Wednesday (right?). I have one more day of work to go after this one. My arm really hurts this morning. Anything I might have to post about would probably be ridiculously self-centered, and I'm pretty sick of hearing about me, so I can't imagine anyone else wants to hear it either. Well, I could talk about last night's Deadliest Catch, ( Read more... )

Originally this universe was supposed to culminate in Dite's wedding. I think. Anyway, that's where this came from.

"Is this weird? It's weird, isn't it."

"It's not that weird," Joxer answered, only slightly less patiently than the last time. He glanced up from straightening Ares' tuxedo jacket and sighed at Ares' arched eyebrow. "Okay, it's a little weird. But families in general are kind of weird these days, Ares. You and Dite have a son together; you're always going to be connected."

"It still feels weird," Ares grumbled, but he let Joxer smooth a few more imaginary wrinkles out of the front of his tux. They both knew they were stalling; Ares wasn't in any hurry to go stand in front of a crowd of two hundred people, most of whom still hated him, and Joxer wasn't in much of a hurry to go sit in the center of the same crowd. But they were family -- sort of, anyway -- so they didn't have much choice.

Finally Joxer let out a little sigh and let his hands fall to his sides, glancing up at the clock on the wall behind him. "I guess it's about that time."

"Let's get this over with," Ares said, smiling when Joxer laughed. He leaned down for a quick kiss, lingering just a few seconds before he pulled back again. "How long do these things usually last, anyway?"

"You're the one who's been married before," Joxer answered, but he was still smiling as he pushed Ares toward the door. "Go on, they're probably looking for you."

Ares nodded and cast one last glance back at Joxer before he walked out of the room. He took his time walking down the long hallway that led to a side door near the front of the church, slowing down a little more as he got closer. He wasn't even sure why he felt so weird about this; they'd worked out most of their unresolved issues a long time ago, and the last few hurt feelings seemed to disappear when Dite got serious about Heph. Somehow they'd all managed to become...well, not friends, exactly, but they got along and it wasn't awkward when they found themselves in the same room from time to time. Still, he hadn't expected to find himself in this situation, and he'd just as soon it was over with.

He was nearly at the door that led to the sanctuary when another door opened to his right, and Ares glanced over just in time to watch Cupid stumble into the hall. His tie was pulled open and his shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, hair sticking up at angles that were bound to give Dite a coronary, and his cheeks were flushed a shade of red that made Ares wish he'd followed his instinct to stay in bed this morning.

"What happened to you?" Ares demanded, but before Cupid could open his mouth he shook his head. "Don't answer that."

He grabbed Cupid's shoulder arm and pulled him to the side of the hall, straightening his tie and attempting to button his collar. The button had gone missing, however, and Ares rolled his eyes and did his best to hide the fact with the knot of Cupid's tie. "Your mother's going to kill you."

Cupid grinned unrepentantly, ducking out of Ares' reach when he went for Cupid's hair. "Totally worth it. Besides, she's not going to be looking at me."

That was probably true, but Ares wasn't about to agree with him. Instead he scowled and dragged Cupid down the hall toward the church. "You could at least try to act your age on your mother's wedding day."

This time Cupid rolled his eyes, but he was still grinning, and Ares had a feeling he and Strife would probably miss most of the reception. Which wasn't such a bad plan, now that Ares thought about it. The chances of talking Joxer into ditching Dite's wedding reception were slim, but maybe it was worth a try.

"How long do these things last, anyway?" Cupid asked, voice dropping to a whisper as they reached the rest of the groomsmen.

Ares stifled a smile and glanced past the nervous-looking groom toward the crowd in the church, searching the sea of faces for a glimpse of Joxer. He spotted him on the bride's side a few rows behind the family, leaning over to fuss at a rumpled-looking Strife. "Knowing your mother, way too long."

I miss them too, sometimes. Then I go looking for Ares/Joxer and Cupid/Strife fic and get depressed again.
