Summary: The end of summer brings changes Becky isn't ready to face.
Author's note: Technically this fits into an ongoing Lori/Becky universe-type-thing, but (I hope) it stands on its own as well.
The sheets were soft against her skin, warm where the sun filtered in through Lori's window and fell across the bed. It had been a long, hot summer, and Becky had spent a lot of it right here, lying on her stomach while Lori idly traced patterns along her back with graceful fingers.
She'd always thought of Lori as graceful, even before they were a 'them', back when Lori was just Merton's friend and Tommy's ex-girlfriend. Back when Becky thought she wanted to be Lori, before she grew up enough to understand that what she really wanted from Lori was so much more than just an example of how to be smart and beautiful and popular.
And Becky was smart - smart enough to graduate close enough to the top of her class to give her her choice of colleges. She was pretty, too - maybe not as pretty as some of the girls Lori had met at college, but she knew Lori meant it when she called Becky beautiful. She said it all the time - between hot, breathless kisses when they were curled on the couch together, over sodas and fries at The Factory, just a few minutes ago when she'd pushed two fingers inside Becky, twisting hard until she was crying out with pleasure.
Lori loved her - she knew it, but still she couldn't stop herself from worrying about what happened now. Because in a few days Lori wouldn't be just hers anymore; they'd be back at school, and even though they'd be on the same campus Becky would be just another freshman, and Lori would be a senior with lots of friends and a whole other life Becky wasn't a part of.
She wasn't sure how she fit into that. She was a little afraid to ask.
She wasn't afraid of college. She'd been looking forward to it for a long time, maybe even longer than she'd known how she felt about Lori. It meant finally getting out of Pleasantville, for one thing, it meant
no parents hovering over her and no more being treated like a baby by Merton. It meant she was finally an adult, and she'd thought by now she'd be so excited she couldn't wait to go.
But that was before summer started, before Lori came home and before their first kiss. Before endless lazy afternoons like this one, when Lori's parents were at work and they had the whole house to themselves to do whatever they wanted. And always, always they ended up right here, the sheet low around their waists and Lori's hair brushing Becky's shoulder when she leaned over to press a kiss against her skin.
"What are you thinking about so hard over there?"
The words were whispered against her skin, and in spite of her mood Becky found herself smiling. "Nothing."
"Liar."
Becky sighed and shifted on the mattress until she was facing Lori, Lori's arm sliding around her waist and she still felt a little self-conscious about lying naked in full view of Lori. It wasn't so much that she thought anything was wrong with the way she looked- she'd filled out in all the right places, after all- but the way Lori looked at her like she could see right inside scared Becky sometimes.
"How far is Radnor from your dorm?"
"I told you, it's only a ten minute walk." Lori was smiling at her, that bemused grin that meant she knew exactly what Becky wasn't saying. And sometimes Becky hated her for being so perceptive, or maybe she just hated herself for being so transparent. "You're not nervous about college, are you?"
"No," Becky answered, and that, at least, was the truth. She wasn't nervous about classes, about professors or keeping up her grades or finding her way around campus. She'd been there once before, after
all, the weekend she'd gone to new student orientation hoping for just a glimpse of Lori, and ended up spending the entire weekend with her. So she wasn't worried about homework or making friends or whether or
not she'd make the basketball team.
All she was really worried about was where she fit into Lori's life, but she couldn't say that, so instead of answering she leaned forward and pressed a soft kiss to the corner of Lori's mouth. Her breath caught in her throat when Lori kissed her back, and that was kind of silly considering how often they'd done this in the past two months, but Lori didn't seem to notice and that was all that mattered.
By the time she pulled away again they were both breathing hard, legs tangled together and her thigh pushing between Lori's legs. And she wanted to start all over again, to forget about school and responsibilities and just stay like this forever, but she knew that wasn't going to happen. So she wasn't surprised when Lori eased away from her, pushing the sheet back and climbing off the mattress before she reached down to pull Becky up.
"Come on, if we hurry we've got time for a shower before my mom gets home. And in a week we'll be back at school and we won't have to worry about parents walking in on us anymore."
It was a good point, and as Becky let Lori lead her toward the bathroom she thought maybe college wouldn't be so bad after all.
