I'm back at work and bored already (of course), and I have some comments to answer, but I feel vaguely nauseous and I'm tired and cranky so instead of doing anything productive I will just do the end of year meme instead. Because I don't feel good and talking about anything else will just get me in trouble.
1. What did you do in 2007 that you'd never done before?
Bought a house.
2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I tried, but it didn't really work out that well. I'm still working on that one, though my only resolution for 2008 is to have more confidence. Easier said than done, but it's the root of all my other issues, so I'll give it a go.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
No, but my sister is closer to adopting, and
rabidfan has a new little one around, so that's pretty exciting. Also, I got a new cat, which is the closest I'm ever getting to parenthood.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
Not yet, but my grandfather's pretty sick. Though I wouldn't call us 'close'.
5. What countries did you visit?
Just The Bahamas.
6. What would you like to have in 2008 that you lacked in 2007?
Same as last year: a publishing contract. And more income.
7. What date from 2007 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
I don't keep track of dates, so I can't say exactly, but finding out my mom has cancer was a pretty memorable day. So was getting the job that's currently boring me to tears.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
I guess the boring job is the big thing, since that's what afforded me my lovely house which I adore.
9. What was your biggest failure?
Writing. I fail at writing big time. I'm still working on it, though I sort of regret all the time I spent on that advent calendar.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
I had a tumor removed from my shoulder, if that counts. Still hurts pretty much all the time and I can't pull up my bra strap on that side. Good times! I also had a root canal, but that probably doesn't count.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
My house.
12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
Al Gore's? I don't know. Oh, wait. Michael C. Hall. I love him a little more every minute. And Steve Carrell, for saving the Office writer/actors' jobs by walking out when he did.
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
Studio executives. Stupid politicians. That girl I work with who needs to get over herself.
14. Where did most of your money go?
Moving and my house. Also my car.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
My cruise. No cruise next year, which I'm sad about, but the next one I take will be in Alaska, so something to look forward to.
16. What song will always remind you of 2007?
Everything by The Weepies, probably.
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? happier
ii. thinner or fatter? the same
iii. richer or poorer? both, but that's a long story
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Writing salable fiction.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Wasting time.
20. How will you be spending Christmas?
I spent it with my family drinking too much and cooking.
22. Did you fall in love in 2007?
No.
23. How many one-night stands?
None.
24. What was your favorite TV program?
Reaper. No, Dexter. No, The Office. I can't pick.
25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
I don't like everyone I work with, but I wouldn't say I hate any of them. I hated those boys who lived next door to me in my apartment complex, but I don't have to deal with them anymore.
26. What was the best book you read?
I just finished the first two Dexter books and they were pretty entertaining, though the show is actually better. Animal, Vegetable, Miracle was also worth my time. The final HP was very satisfying.
27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
I haven't paid much attention to music this year, but I am enjoying The Morning After Girls. Also Temporary Thing's new album, but I knew about them before this year.
28. What did you want and get?
The perfect house. A decent paying job.
29. What did you want and not get?
A publishing contract, but that's my own fault.
30. What was your favorite film of this year?
Hmm. Paris Je T'aime was lovely. I really enjoyed Enchanted. There wasn't that much out this year that really stuck with me, I guess. It's been kind of a weird year, overall.
31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I turned 35 this year and I spent it with my sister at The Biltmore Estate, then with her family for sushi and ice cream cake. It was not what I'd planned, but Plan A got demolished by forces outside my control, which is not happening next year.
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
If I'd finished that novel. Or the other one.
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2007?
Slacker chic. I started off trying to dress more professionally, but my workplace is not exactly conducive. Neither is my paycheck.
34. What kept you sane?
It's so pathetic to say livejournal, but it keeps me from losing it at work when I have nothing to do. Also TWoP, before the strike. Having my sister in town helps too, I'm surprised to say.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
This is such a hard question for me to answer. I didn't really obsess over anyone this year; just the usual suspects, and even them not so much.
36. What political issue stirred you the most?
The usual, I suppose. I can't really put my finger on any one thing, it's all so overwhelmingly dismal.
37. Who did you miss?
My parents. LJ friends who have disappeared or stopped talking to me for whatever reason. I can't keep in touch any other way aside from LJ, it seems, but it feels like people I've cared about have moved on. Ah, well. I'm still here if they decide they miss me too.
38. Who was the best new person you met?
There are a few people at work I really like, but I'll protect their privacy and not name names.
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2007:
Life goes on whether you're in it or not, so you might as well get in there.
And that's...sort of maudlin, but I guess that's the kind of mood I'm in. I'm sure I'll snap out of it before long.
My Christmas was nice, though I am not sad to be back home with the cats. I got a cordless lawn trimmer from my parents, which is a very nice gift and a sure sign that I'm a homeowner. I also got a Target gift card, which I spent yesterday on new table lamps for my bedroom. Which shows where my priorities are these days, I guess, since I could have spent it all on DVDs.
