Like That. Apparently Victoria is a little bitter toward Lex and Roger. I feel kind of bad about that, because I like Lex and Roger. And Lex/Roger. But I just work here, so I do what she tells me. I don't know how long yet this series will be. I'm hoping not too long, but you know all about best-laid plans.
She didn't spend the whole weekend thinking about Megan. There was homework to do, after all, and if she put off cleaning her room much longer her mother was going to throw everything she owned out the window. But neither of those things required a lot of concentration, which left her plenty of time to think about Megan and Lex and everything that happened during the last game.
She was glad she let Megan win their battle, because when she got to the library she had to pretend not to notice Roger scrambling to disentangle himself from Lex. And it was too dark to tell for sure, but she knew if the lights were on she'd be able to see swollen lips and that tell-tale flush in Roger's cheeks. She wasn't sure Lex was actually capable of blushing, but if he was she was pretty sure he was doing it when she walked in and threw herself down at one of the tables.
And it had been funny, watching them try not to steal glances at each other. Funny, but kind of sickening, because she knew if it was Megan who'd showed up instead of her they'd still be doing the same thing. They might even have been worse, because Roger only paid attention to Victoria because he still felt guilty about blowing her off. And Lex…Lex didn't care about anything.
She wasn't even sure why she was so mad at Lex, because she and Megan had never been what anybody would call friends. So either it was some weird sisterhood thing, or she actually had a soft spot for Megan. Not that she'd ever admit it, because she didn't even like Megan all that much, but she hated the way Lex treated people more. Like they were chess pieces in some game that only he understood, and their feelings didn't matter as long as they did what he wanted.
It wasn't that she cared that Lex didn't want Megan; she was glad he didn't, because Megan really could do better. But she didn't deserve to be treated like something Lex scraped off the bottom of his stupid combat boots, either, and if she wasn't going to stand up for herself Victoria would do it for her. It was just a matter of principle.
So it wasn't about Megan, not really, and Victoria wasn't looking for her when she got to school on Monday. She wasn't looking, but she spotted Megan right away, sitting in the cafeteria where Victoria had found her on Friday night. Only she wasn't alone this time, because Roger was sitting across from her wearing that stupid grin. The one that Victoria used to think meant something, but obviously she was wrong, because it turned out that Roger smiled at everyone that way.
Before she had time to think about it she was across the room, sliding into the chair closest to Megan. "Hi."
"Hi," Megan said, her expression a mixture of surprise and relief, and it didn't take much for Victoria to figure out she wasn't really enjoying making small talk with Lex's boyfriend. Especially not when he was probably just killing time until Lex showed up, and Victoria didn't want Megan anywhere near Lex if she could help it.
"Did you do the history questions?" Victoria asked, pointedly ignoring Roger and when Megan glanced at him Victoria reached out and tucked a stray strand of hair behind Megan's ear. "Because I think I might have messed up the last one. Think you can look at it for me?"
And now Megan just looked confused, although whether it was because Victoria was ignoring Roger or because she was still touching Victoria wasn't sure. She wasn't even sure what she was doing; she hadn't thought any of this through, but she liked the way Megan's skin felt under her fingers and she liked it even more when Megan was focused on her. Megan who'd never really talked to her, who followed Lex around like she couldn't breathe without him, looking at Victoria like she was something new.
Something special.
"Since when do you need help in history?" Roger asked, reminding Victoria that he was still sitting there, still grinning at them like there was some joke he didn't quite get. She rolled her eyes, earning a shy smile from Megan that made her glad she was sitting down.
"Not everybody can be perfect," she answered, glancing at Roger long enough to smile her sweetest smile. "Speaking of which, where's Lex?"
Right on cue he blushed, corners of his mouth twitching and she couldn't believe he really thought they were fooling anybody. If it wasn't so nauseating it would be kind of sweet. And she didn't even blame Roger - not really - but she was still a little pissed that he hadn't just told her he wasn't interested right up front.
She didn't wait for an answer before she stood up, tugging at Megan's arm until she took the hint and let Victoria pull her out of her chair. "Come on, let's go someplace quieter. The library's probably empty for once."
She didn't have to look at Roger to know he was blushing even harder now, but she glanced back at him anyway, smirking at the sight of him glancing around the cafeteria. Looking for Lex, most likely, and that was all the reason Victoria needed to get Megan out of there. Because she didn't mind picking up the pieces the last time Megan fell apart over Lex, but she wasn't in the mood to listen to it again. He wasn't worth it, and the sooner Megan realized that the better off they'd all be.
"Do you really want me to look at your history homework?"
Victoria laughed and slid her arm through Megan's, shaking her head and dragging Megan down the hall in the direction of the girls' restroom. "No, I just wanted to ditch Roger."
She wasn't sure what she was expecting; a protest, maybe, because Megan had probably been sitting there enduring Roger's version of small talk in the hope that Lex would show up eventually. Victoria wouldn't put it past Megan to torture herself over him, but she didn't put up a fight when Victoria pulled her into the restroom. Instead she dropped her backpack and leaned against the sink, head tilted to the side as she watched Victoria fix her lipstick.
"That color's too bright for you, you know."
And she wasn't offended, because she did what she wanted and she didn't really give a damn what anyone thought. But she couldn't help frowning at her reflection, taking in red lips and pale skin before she looked over at Megan. "What, you're some kind of expert?"
"No. But my mom's a cosmetologist. You should come over, she's got a lot of samples and stuff."
"Yeah?" Victoria said, the corners of her mouth turning up when Megan smiled.
"After school. Unless you've got plans already."
"No plans," she answered, smile turning mischievous and she wasn't positive, but she could almost swear Megan was blushing. And she wasn't sure how she felt about Megan giving her a makeover, but if it kept her mind off Lex for awhile it was worth it.
