Chapter 21. Last Chance

The view from Adam’s hotel window was a breathtaking landscape of the Tower of London and the iconic Tower Bridge. Extending as far as his eyes could see was the river Thames. On the north side of it just east of the Tower of London and Tower Bridge was St. Katharine Dock. The luxurious hotel was built in the older area of London that was rich in local history, but the commanding sight failed to lift Adam’s spirit. Even the glorious morning sunshine that was rare in the city did not perk up his downcast mood.

He felt wretched for disappointing Kris. Everything was all over; he had missed the graduation, the party, the reunion. He grimaced at all his broken promises. How does one make up after that huge failure and letdown? Adam’s shoulders fell forward; his hair gently dropped on his forehead as he started biting his nail in extreme anxiety.

What if Kris is mad at me? What if he doesn’t love me anymore?

A soft knock on the door that announced room service interrupted his morose thoughts.

“Good morning, Mr. Lambert. Mr. Kennedy requested for your breakfast to be served in his suite. He is expecting you to join him now.”

Adam forced a false smile on his lips and replied in a barely audible whisper, “Thank you.”

Alex selected the Continental Breakfast with croissant, Danish and muffins, cereals and muesli, homemade yoghurts, a bowl of fresh fruit, and fruit smoothie. The lavish breakfast was laid down on a coffee table sandwiched between two luxurious couches beside an expansive window with a magnificent view of the river Thames.

Alex was lounging on the couch opposite Adam and seemed to be satisfied with just coffee for his breakfast. His deep voice cut the awkward silence in the room, “I’m glad the clothes fit.”

“Thanks.” Adam afforded Alex a quick glance before dropping his gaze again. The purple reddish bruise on Alex’s left eye was a grim reminder of the embarrassing encounter with his boss last night and he couldn’t bring himself to look at him straight in the eyes.  If Alex had the slightest awareness of his ridiculous behavior last night he did not show any sign.

“It’s the least thing I could do after bringing you here at such short notice and not giving you time to pack your stuff. I know you’re mad at me for making you miss your appointment. I want to make it up to you and also thank you for stopping me from making a total fool of myself last night in the hotel lobby,” Alex said in a casual tone.

Alex put his cup down on the table and sat on the couch beside Adam. He took out a small box from his coat and placed it on Adam’s lap. “We’ll leave as soon as you’re done. And don’t give me any of that lame reason why you can’t accept my gift. I bought it for you so keep it.” Alex said succinctly before heading straight to his bedroom.

Adam was confused at Alex’s strange behavior; he was becoming too unpredictable. He could not understand the sudden shift in his moods from being cold and dismissive one moment to becoming attentive and generous next.

He looked down at the elegant velvety package on his lap. A thousand sparkles hit his eyes when he opened the box. Sitting at the center was a glittering diamond bracelet. Despite himself, Adam let out a breath of amazement at the beautiful cut and clarity of the stones. His mind refused to think about its price tag. Considering how much money his boss was making, he was certain that it was just a minor cut from his petty cash.

Adam sighed and wore it on his left wrist since he was already wearing the watch that also came from Alex on his right wrist. He would do what pleases Alex for now to avoid any argument that would further delay his trip back home. He took his precious moon necklace out from under his shirt, his most valuable possession, and his face lit up with the first sincere smile of the day as Kris crossed his mind.

Adam was fidgeting nervously in Alex’s car in anticipation of seeing Kris again.

Adam had initially planned to take a cab from the airport to surprise Kris but his boss insisted on lending him his car together with his chauffeur when Adam told him that he still had some shopping to do before heading home. Adam was glad that he accepted the offer; it was much easier to have his own personal driver while he shopped for Kris’s graduation gift.

He had planned his present days earlier so he was able to pick the perfect gift right away and paid for the Gibson guitar that Kris had been eyeing. His boyfriend wanted to replace his old guitar but thought it could wait since he did not have the time yet to play with his busy schedule. With the big bonus from his latest project, Adam finally afforded the gift. After having the gift wrapped, he passed by a cake shop and bought Kris’s favorite cupcake.

Now that he was on his way home, he suddenly felt anxious. What if Kris wasn’t in his apartment? What if he doesn’t like my gift? What if he’s still mad at me and wanted to break up?

“Mr. Lambert?” The driver held the door open and had a questioning look on his face.

“Oh, I’m sorry Henry, I didn’t realize we’ve arrived.” Adam heaved a big sigh of relief when he saw Kris’s car parked at its usual place. He carried the cupcake nervously and the driver helped him with the large package.

Adam slipped into his apartment quietly. He could hear Kris playing guitar from his bedroom. He quickly lit the tiny candle and pushed it into the center of the cupcake. With bated breath he walked slowly into the bedroom.

Kris was on the bed strumming his old guitar on his lap. His eyes were closed and there was a pained expression on his face as his sweet tender voice sang his heart out.

Adam stood immobile when he heard Kris singing their song. The deep tender yearning in his voice tugged at Adam’s deepest core and he couldn’t help the tears from falling.

“...To make you feel my... love...,” Kris sang the last line with so much sadness in his voice that it broke Adam’s heart to see how he had caused Kris so much pain. By the time the song ended, the candle had melted on the cupcake and Adam was sobbing like a child.

“Adam!” Kris dropped his guitar and ran toward him.

Adam was mumbling through his tears, “I’m so sorry... Kris.”

“Come here. Hey, it wasn’t your fault.” Kris took the ruined cupcake from Adam and hugged him like his life depended on it. “Shh, baby, it’s okay.” It felt so good having Adam in his arms again. He was so happy; it felt like his heart would burst. And even if it did, it wouldn’t matter so long as he would die happy with Adam.

“Come, let’s sit down okay, you look tired,” Kris offered when Adam had calmed down a bit. Kris gently wiped the tears from Adam’s face. His pure innocent beauty always took his breath away. Kris leaned closer to drop short kisses on Adam’s open lips with so much tenderness that they felt like light feathers brushing his lips.

Adam’s breath hitched from crying so hard and he struggled to keep his voice steady, “Are you mad at me?” Adam’s eyelids fluttered and his Bambi eyes framed with those ridiculously long thick lashes worked its sure magic again and turned Kris into a horny teenager.

Instead of answering, Kris quickly but gently pushed Adam on his back and kissed him passionately. Everything else ceased to matter at that point. The only thing the boys cared about was the love they had for each other. Kris slowly undressed him with trembling hands and reverently kissed every inch of his bared skin. He drank in the sweet taste of Adam’s smooth skin. His alluring scent intoxicated him and the sound of pleasure that escaped his lips drove him mad with desire.

He gently nudged Adam to roll over on his stomach. When he saw Adam’s reservation, he whispered to his ears in a tone dripping with sex, “I will not penetrate you, baby, let me just see your beautiful back.”

No matter how many times Kris had seen Adam naked, it always seemed like he was seeing it for the first time. “God, Adam, you’re the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.” Kris’s eyes marvelled at the creamy skin of his shoulders. His hungry eyes then followed the length of his body as it sloped gracefully down to his lower back where it rose again into the soft curve of his perfect ass then down to his smooth legs that seemed to go on forever. “Perfect,” Kris whispered.

Adam’s body shivered at the explicit desire in Kris’s voice. He gasped when he felt Kris’s lips caressed his nape. Kris’s calloused hand then ghosted over Adam’s heated skin and Kris lovingly kissed the path it traced from the shoulders down to the delicious curve of his ass.

Adam’s hands were clenching the sheets tightly; his body was writhing and rubbing his swollen manhood against the bed to relieve the pressure building up in his groin. Kris’s delicious mouth was inducing a premature ejaculation as droplets of cum formed on the head of his erection.

Kris kneaded his firm ass and spread the glorious cheeks apart. He brushed the pink puckered hole with his thumb.

Adam bit on his pillow to keep himself from screaming with pleasure. “Kris... please...”

Kris spread the cum that escaped from his length and covered his erection with it before rubbing it between Adam’s cheeks. He rubbed his manhood back and forth and felt deliriously happy with the sensation it gave. He sucked on Adam’s neck marking him while he continued to thrust between Adam’s cheeks. When he was on the brink of his orgasm, he reached under and stroke Adam’s hard length in unison with his thrusts.

“Come for me, baby.”

“Kris...”

“Fuck, Adam!”

The two exploded together in ecstasy. Kris spilled his essence on Adam’s back while his hand was covered with Adam’s. He rolled over and pulled Adam on his side. Still too weak to stand, Kris just grabbed the discarded clothes lying on the bed and wiped both of them clean. He then hugged Adam from behind.

“That was so hot, baby. I love you so much.”

Adam turned around to face him. He smiled demurely before replying, “I love you too.” Then his face became serious again, “I’m really sorry I missed your graduation.”

“I told you it’s not your...,” Kris stopped when Adam suddenly sat up and tried to leave the bed. He had suddenly remembered his gift.

Kris pulled him back and said, “Where are you going, that was just a prelude, I’m not done with you yet.”

Adam smiled lovingly at Kris and leaned down to kiss the smirk off his face. “I know. I will just get something.”

When Kris let him go, he climbed out of the bed and wiggled his perfect ass to tease Kris and he chuckled when he heard him moan.

“You’re gonna regret that move, Lambert.”

When Adam came back with the huge package, Kris’s eyes lit up like a child receiving his first birthday gift.

“Open it,” Adam said excitedly. “This is my graduation present to you. I’m so proud of you, Kris.”

Kris gave him a quick peck on the lips, before ripping the wrapper. His jaw dropped open when he saw the box. He quickly opened it and took out the expensive guitar.

“Wow!” It was hard for Kris to be eloquent when his heart was filled with so much emotion. He knew his boyfriend must have spent most of his savings just to give him this expensive gift. His eyes watered with so much gratitude to the universe for giving him Adam.

Words failed him at the moment so he did the next best thing. He played his new guitar and sang all of his unspoken feelings to Adam. They were both overwhelmed with emotions at the end of the song.

Kris carefully put the guitar back in its case. And to make up for lost time, the boys had more make out sessions that night until they were both worn out. They slept soundly for the first time in days all blissed out in each other’s arms.

********************************************

The four college buddies gathered in Kris’s large apartment for a despedida party for Matt and Megan who were both off to London to continue their studies. They also planned to start their business there and later on maybe settle down to start a small family.

The large coffee table in the sitting room was littered with a huge open box of pizza with only one slice left, an empty sushi tray, a plate of barbecue sauce without the barbecue, a half filled bowl of salad, a dish of taco crumbs, and a salver of half-finished assorted pastries. Scattered here and there were half filled glasses of wine and several cans of empty beer.

Their excited voices that were reminiscing their happy memories together, mixed at times with loud laughter, rose above the soft music playing in the background.

Adam was flanked by Megan and Matt on the couch as their punishment for missing their graduation. Kris on the other hand sat on the opposite couch beside his Gibson guitar.

“Play a song for us, Kris,” Megan pleaded.

“Yeah, let’s sing just like old times.” Matt stood up and went to the piano to start playing. And the opening notes of Journey’s rock hit song Don’t Stop Believing began. The soft tender voice of Kris floated into the air as he sang the first line and then he gave Adam an encouraging smile to do the next line. Adam’s strong voice rang out into the air and Kris gave him a cute wink of approval. Matt’s turn to belt out the song came, followed by Megan and then everyone started rocking out.

Megan pulled Adam up and they started dancing. Kris’s and Matt’s eyes met and they exchanged looks that seemed to say, we’re two lucky dudes to have them. Then Kris stood up and blew them away with fancy riffs from his guitar that took the song to the next level.

Adam fell more in love with Kris; they looked at each other with hearts in their eyes. Matt and Megan exchange knowing looks and felt happy for their friends. They continued singing up to the last note. Everyone was out of breath laughing after they finished the song.

After that a quiet hush fell in the room.

“I’m gonna miss you, guys.” Matt was the first to admit what the rest was too scared to face.

They all looked at each other with wistful longing.

Not wanting to ruin their last night together, Megan exclaimed, “Let’s have a reunion like this every year. Guys, let’s have a group hug.”

After disentagling himself from his friends, Adam took the cue from Megan and announced, “I think it’s time to serve the ice cream. Who wants a cup?” All hands rose and Adam offered to serve them.

Adam was about to step back into the living room carrying the tray of ice cream when he heard Matt and Kris talking about him.

“Have you told Adam?” Matt asked, concern apparent in his voice.

“What’s there to tell?” Kris tried to sound unconcerned.

Megan gave Matt a warning look that seemed to say, stay out of it.

Matt glared back at Megan. This was his last chance to give his friend a good advice and he was not about to turn back on his responsibility as Kris’s friend.

“Buddy, I think Adam has the right to know that your mother wants you to continue your studies in London, too. And I get it, since you’ll be running your family business soon, the theories you’ll learn in school will be useful.”

Kris glowered at Matt. His expression said it all, How many times do we have to talk about this? Kris took a deep breath. He refused to argue with Matt this time when Adam was close by to overhear them. “Does it matter whether I tell him or not, when I had already chosen to stay.”

Matt was not deterred, “It matters because I know if Adam knew, he would not let you throw away this opportunity. After all, this is for both your future.”

Kris looked defeated. He knew all too well that Adam would always put other peoples’ needs first above his own; Matt just echoed his exact thoughts. He looked at his friends with a pained expression on his face, “I don’t think I could live without him. I have never loved anyone more than I love Adam. When I went to London and we were apart for just a few days, I thought I would lose my mind. I never want to ever experience that again.”

Tears ran down Adam’s cheeks when he heard the anguish in Kris’s voice; he knew Kris had missed him, but it was his first time to hear that Kris’s pain ran much deeper than he had imagined.

Even Megan who hated drama became teary-eyed.

“Then tell him exactly that and ask him to go with you,” Matt said in exasperation.

“You make it sound so easy, Matt. What do you want me to do? Ask Adam to just leave his dream job because I said so. I couldn’t do that to him-uproot him from his home and stop him from doing what he loves most. I love him too much.” Kris reasoned out in a shaky voice he was doing his best to control.

Adam ran quietly back to the kitchen since he could not anymore control his emotions. His body was shaking in his effort to push down all his feelings inside. He was determined not to ruin the night.

Megan broke the deafening silence in the room. She placed her hand on Matt’s thigh to placate him, “Matt, Kris and Adam will figure things out for themselves.”

Matt’s face broke out into a wide grin and quickly switched into his dorky self again, “Dude, chill. I get your point. You can’t leave Adam for a second and not find anyone hitting on him. It’s really hard to have a boyfriend who is the very definition of sex on legs for crying out loud.”

“Is that why you always follow me around... like a dog,” Megan asked, a tad irritated.

“You bet!”

“Why, that’s insulting!” Megan exclaimed in annoyance. “You can’t blame Adam and me for looking the way we do. We’re born this way-to look gorgeous. We can’t help it. But we are extremely faithful, so you don’t need to guard us... idiot.”

Kris smiled. He was used to his friends’ drama. Despite the constant arguments between Matt and Megan, he knew that their love for each other was as deep as his affection for Adam.

“Oh, common, don’t be like that. I was just trying to make Kris laugh, I was just kidding.” Megan visibly relaxed and Matt took that opportunity to kiss and make up. They embraced and started kissing each other, and totally ignored Kris.

Kris snorted. He was about to stand and find out what happened to Adam when he came out balancing a tray filled with four cups of ice cream.

When Adam saw the two making out on the couch he rolled his eyes playfully and smiled at Kris. Kris just shrugged his shoulders in response and gestured for Adam to sit beside him.

“Are you okay, baby?” Kris held Adam’s face between his hands.

“Yeah, why shouldn’t I be?”

Kris rubbed their noses together and said, “I don’t know. All I care to know is I love you.”

They hugged. Adam made a quick mental note to talk to Kris later. Now was not the time.

Adam cleared his throat with more force than necessary. “Hey, you two lovebirds the ice cream will melt.”

Matt and Megan stayed for several more hours until they announced that they were finally leaving. The four friends engaged again in an adorable group hug and promised to stay in touch.

Adam and Kris cleaned up the mess in the apartment in comfortable silence. Adam could feel the heavy burden Kris was carrying as if it was a tangible thing. He could only imagine how confused Kris must be feeling. They needed to have that talk tonight. Adam waited until they were in bed and he was safely enveloped in Kris’s arms.

“Kris...” Adam whispered.

“Hmm...?” Kris inhaled the sweet fruity scent of Adam’s hair.

“You know you’re the most important thing in my life, right?” The hand that was rubbing Adam’s arm suddenly stilled.

“My career..., my apartment..., everything, they all mean nothing to me without you. I may have grown up here in California, but home is wherever you may be. I’ll follow you even up to the ends of the world.” Adam swallowed through the lump in his throat.

Kris held Adam even tighter. “I love you. I’ll try and always remember that, baby.” He kissed the back of Adam’s head and whispered,“Go to sleep.”

Adam just nodded sleepily and he felt satisfied to let Kris know his true feelings.

“Oh, Adam?”

“Hmm?”

“Remind me to put a plug in Matt’s big mouth the next time he visits.”

Both boys laughed out loud. Kris slept with a much lighter heart that night.
