Chapter 19. Gambit
Even after two weeks had passed since Kris came back, the two boys could not seem to take their hands off of each other. Despite Kris’s busy schedule at school as he tried to catch up on everything he had missed-projects and exams, his libido went through the roof. Every night became a make out session and Kris mostly stayed in Adam’s apartment.
That morning, Adam woke up to a spectacular blow job. The memory brought a smile to Adam’s face and he blushed with embarrassment when a cute guy in the elevator smiled back at him. He was so glad when the door pinged just in time so he could escape the awkward situation especially when the guy seemed to think that he was flirting with him.
Adam had been in a much cheerful mood the past days. Work had been much lighter in the absence of Alex, who was apparently out on a business trip. It was also refreshing to be able to chat again with his friends, Ally and Sutan. As ridiculous as it might sound, Adam could not help being reminded of the saying, “When the cat is away, the mice will play.”
Like they used to do, Sutan and Ally made his new office their hangout during breaks. The three easily got back to their comfortable companionship as if they never spent time apart. What Adam found perplexing was how his two friends did not ask any personal questions about his sudden promotion. For whatever reason they might have, Adam was just glad that he did not have to explain something that also did not make sense to him.
“Ms. Abdul loved all your designs, Adam.” Sutan was back to overlooking the day-to-day operations of Parris while Alex was away.
Adam was ecstatic at the news. Since he had completed his major project successfully, he was quite positive that he would be allowed to take a leave of absence from work. Adam took the opportunity to test his theory but his voice sounded diffident, “Sutan, do you think Alex would let me take a few days off from work next week?”
“I don’t see why not. How many days are we talking about?” Sutan replied.
“I want to attend my boyfriend’s graduation,” Adam blushed when Ally and Sutan exchanged knowing glances and smiled at him teasingly. He smiled back bashfully and continued speaking, “His family is coming over to visit and he’s kind of expecting me to be there, give or take two to three days.”
Adam felt happy for Kris, but he could not help feeling dreadful about meeting his mother again. The idea of proving himself worthy to be her son’s husband seemed exhausting. But if that would mean sharing a life with Kris, then he would not think twice of doing it. He pushed down the morose thoughts and forced himself to feel optimistic.
“When will we finally meet this lucky boy?” Ally interrupted his thoughts.
“I could bring him after graduation; I’m sure both of you will love him,” Adam suggested.
While the three were planning excitedly, they were oblivious to the fact that their conversation was being recorded.

Adam easily felt the tension in the office when he arrived. Kara told him that Alex wanted to see him immediately. So, the boss has arrived, no wonder everybody looked tensed. Adam thought. He was told to go straight to the office as Alex was expecting him. He walked tentatively toward the large desk where his boss was busy browsing at some documents.
“Sit down,” Alex said without looking up.
“Thank you, Alex. How was your trip?” Adam tried to start a casual conversation.
When Alex looked up, his cold gaze sent shivers down his spine. It was as if Alex could see right through him and it made him feel exposed, vulnerable, and nervous.
“Why aren’t you wearing the watch I gave you?”
“Oh...,” he stammered to think of a good excuse, “I don’t want to break it or lose it,” Adam lied. He had actually forgotten about the watch when Kris came back with all his favorite gifts.
“I’ll buy you another one if that happens. I want you to wear it,” Alex said not as a request but as a command.
“Ok,” Adam just agreed.
“I suppose Sutan already told you that Paula highly approved of everything in your catalog.”
Adam simply nodded in response. He was discreetly gauging Alex’s mood. He needed to know if it was the best time to ask him for a leave. He could not mess up his only chance. It needed proper timing. He took a deep breath before speaking, “Alex, since I completed the project in advance, would it be alright to take...”
“I promised Paula that we will be throwing in five more dresses as a bonus for her generosity,” Alex interrupted in a nonnegotiable tone. He stood, walked around his desk and stopped in front of Adam, and handed him a check. “As you can see, she paid you more than our agreed price. I told her the additional designs will be delivered to her by Wednesday. And I never go back on my words.”
Adam’s jaw dropped at the amount on the check; it was three times more than what he expected to get. “I really appreciate this, Alex…,” Adam paused as he remembered his dilemma. “But it’s already Monday. That’ll give me just one day to finish everything, I don’t know if I could do that,” Adam’s voice sounded rueful.
“Paula is a very important client of Parris. I expect those designs at exactly ten in the morning on my desk day after tomorrow. I hope you won’t fail me, Adam. You may leave.”
Adam’s heart sank. He did not have any choice. If he wanted to attend Kris’s graduation, he had to finish his assignment by tomorrow. He wanted to have a longer time getting ready for one of the most important events in Kris’s life.
Determined to succeed, Adam started sketching as soon as he got back to his office. He was very thankful that at least his brain was cooperating as fresh and bright ideas continually poured out from it. It was almost noon while he was adding the finishing touches to his first design, when Alex summoned him again to his office. What does he want this time? He thought. He glanced down sadly at his work before leaving his office. Oh well, one down... four to go, he said to himself squeezing out an optimistic smile from his lips.

When Adam got home, he plopped down on the couch, too beat to do anything else. His level of optimism took a deep plunge downward. He could’ve finished another dress at the office, if Alex hadn’t insisted on bringing him along to watch a fashion show for the entire afternoon. Even if his mind was preoccupied with ideas about his own assignment, Adam still did his best to concentrate on the show and take down notes.
Kris came out of the bedroom when he heard Adam arrived. “Hey, I could whip up dinner if you like?” He sat down beside Adam and started massaging his tensed shoulders.
“That feels so good, Kris. Please don’t stop.”
“Hard day at work, huh?”
“Uh-huh,” he mumbled indistinctly with a nod of agreement. It was hard to form a coherent response when his mind was concentrating on the delicious pressure of Kris’s healing hands as they efficiently kneaded the pain away from his strained muscles.
Moans of pleasure escaped Adam’s lips and the sound went straight to Kris’s dick. Adam was lying on his stomach. Kris’s strong hands were slowly moving down from Adam’s shoulders to knead the muscles of his lower back and they lingered just above the curve of his ass that was showing above the waistline of his jeans that sat low on his hips.
With the way Kris’s warm hands started to caress the skin of his lower back and the quickening pace of his breathing, Adam knew where this massage would lead if he did not put a stop to it. “Kristopher..., I know what your dirty mind is up to,” he teased as he turned on his back to look at Kris who was wearing an endearingly guilty look on his face.
He sat up and tried to appease him. “I’m sorry, Kris, but not tonight. I can’t let you wear me out; I have a deadline to finish.” He smiled before continuing, “I promise I’ll make it up to you, okay? I really need to finish this so I could make it to your graduation.” Adam felt bad rejecting Kris, especially when he saw the bulge through his boxer shorts but he had no choice.
“There’s no need to feel sorry, baby. I understand. I’ll take a rain check and leave you in peace only if you let me prepare you something to eat,” Kris said in a voice full of sincerity.
“It’s a deal,” Adam said lightly. Before Kris could stand, Adam held his adorable face between his hands and in a more serious tone, he whispered, “Thank you, Kris, I love you,” and Adam kissed him lovingly on the lips.
Kris smiled back before replying, “I love you more.”

Adam started early the next day. He bought two cups of his favorite coffee to help him stay awake at work. Last night, he was only able to stay up long enough to complete his second dress. If his eyes had allowed him, he would have opted to finish two, but he could not keep his eyes open. He prayed hard that his boss would not give him extra assignments today.
His spirit rose when he had completed his third dress before lunch and was halfway done with his fourth one when Alex chose that time to visit his office.
“How are the designs coming along?”
Adam handed him the portfolio containing his completed work. “I’m working on the fourth dress.”
Alex’s gaze fell on the watch Adam was wearing but did not show any indication if he had noticed it or not. “Good! Get ready to leave after five minutes because I need another pair of eyes to critique a new collection of menswear that will be featured in our magazine next month.” Alex turned to leave without giving Adam the chance to reply.
Adam’s shoulders dropped in frustration. This will be another long night.
***********************************************
Kris was eating a sandwich, while Adam was busy polishing the designs he needed to submit the next day. “Adam, aren’t you going to eat? You’ve been slaving over those sketches since yesterday, aren’t those done yet?” Kris asked concerned that his boyfriend would overexert himself.
Kris bit his tongue, he knew Adam would not appreciate hearing what he had been dying to suggest. Kris felt strongly that Adam did not really need this job. With all his money, he could help Adam put up his own shops that would sell clothes carrying his own name so Adam could get full credit for his talent. And since Kris knew without a shadow of a doubt that Adam would succeed, it took him a thousand times more effort to keep his mouth shut not wanting to complicate things. But seeing how hard Adam was working made this unwelcome resistance focus on one single target-Kris got royally pissed off at Adam’s boss and convinced himself that the prick was a fucking slave driver whose only concern was how he could get more money without considering the welfare of his employees.
Kris wished now more than ever to be given the chance to vent all his frustrations directly to Adam’s boss seeing how Adam had not stopped working and had not even lifted his head to look at the food he prepared since he got home from the office.
Kris’s brewing anger was somehow momentarily forgotten when something caught his attention. “Where did you get that?” Kris asked. After having been with Adam for quite a long time, he knew almost all things his boyfriend owned and he was pretty sure he had not seen the watch before.
Adam stopped drawing and looked at where Kris was pointing. “Oh, Mr. Kennedy gave this to me. He said it’s a bonus since my last project did really well and brought them a lot of money,” Adam answered matter-of-factly.
“That’s a very expensive watch, Adam,” Kris was suddenly curious.
“I know right. I told him it wasn’t necessary, but he really insisted and said that this will inspire me to make more beautiful designs, so I just accepted it.” Adam paused as if suddenly realizing something then casually added, “I think they usually do this to all employees who bring in extra revenues, so hey I’m not complaining.” After an awkward pause Adam added softly, “I should be grateful that they even pay that much attention to what I do, considering there are a lot of better designers out there.”
Kris felt guilty for making Adam feel that he did not deserve such an expensive gift. On the contrary, Kris believed that Adam deserved a lot more for his wonderful talents. He was just feeling a little jealous, but he would not let Adam feel insecure about that.
“Hey, baby,” Kris tilted Adam’s chin to see those beautiful eyes that were clouded with doubt. “He gave you that, because you totally deserve it and your Hitler boss is scared that you will bring your wonderful designs elsewhere,” Kris said in all honesty.
Adam’s eyes were smiling and Kris’s heart skipped a beat. That smile and those eyes would never grow old, Kris thought. Kris claimed Adam’s mouth with a hungry kiss and Adam kissed him back, this time Adam did not stop him but returned his affection with equal fervor.
After Kris fell asleep satisfied, Adam quietly slipped out of the bedroom to finish his work. The long night ahead did not dissuade Adam. In fact, instead of wearing him out, his make out session with Kris revitalized him not just to finish his assignment but to come up with his best design yet.
When Adam was certain that his work was ready for submission the next day, he quietly went back to the bedroom. Not wanting to disturb Kris, he lay down on the far end of the bed.
“Adam, come here,” Kris mumbled sleepily as he stretched his arms to pull Adam closer.
“Why aren’t you asleep yet?” Adam laid his head on Kris’s chest.
Kris wrapped his strong arms around Adam. “I was waiting for you.”
Adam lifted his head and leaned down to give Kris a chaste kiss on the mouth, “I love you.”
Kris kissed the tip of Adam’s nose and said, “I love you more.”
Adam fell asleep with a smile on his lips. Everything was going according to plan. He finally completed his project and he was excited to be part of Kris’s graduation. These were the last thoughts on his mind before sleep finally overtook him.
