Chapter 9. Dark Knight

Sutan selected the best shots from the shoot and headed to Mr. Kennedy’s office. Even if Sutan knew that Alex Kennedy would highly approve of his work, he could not help feeling a little nervous.

Alex Kennedy exuded an intimidating aura that communicates one clear message, “Don’t mess with me because I always get what I want.” His tall 6’4” frame made solely of lean, hard muscles developed from his military training was kept taut by regular workouts. His sharp blue eyes rarely missed minute details. At 36, he was at the prime of his life, with a successful career to boot and a stable long-time relationship with a rich and glamorous model and socialite. He was ruggedly handsome in a sexy, dangerous, and mysterious kind of way.

He is an enigma to everyone, except to Sutan who is privy to some personal family information. Unknown to many, Agatha Kennedy had grown very close to Sutan who had earned the Iron Lady’s trust and had opened up albeit sparingly about her life in order to unload to a friend.

Sutan did not know if knowing more than others was really such a good idea.  But he kept everything to himself despite his love for gossip, because he knew that it would serve his best interest to make Alex his ally and not his enemy.

Sutan knew that Alex Kennedy was a rebellious kid who refused to be told what to do.

One might think that having famous and talented parents would have made life easy for him; it turned out quite the opposite, especially since he grew up in the midst of kids who were also rich and even more spoiled than him.

Alex resented the fact that people underestimated his own talents and attributed his growing popularity to his rich parents. Having a short temper also made life more difficult as he frequently got in trouble with the school bullies that his father did not approve of.

As a young kid, Alex started to blame his parents for not being there for him while he was growing up. They were far too busy making money to take care of their only son. This growing dislike for his parents planted a strong bitterness in his heart and gave him the excuse to disobey them and do the exact opposite of what he’d been told.

It was in College when he decided to live his life the way he wanted to, away from the shadow of his parents. After only one semester in an Ivy League arts and design university, where he practically committed all forms of misbehavior with the intention of embarrassing his parents, he finally got kicked out.

He then joined the Navy where all his anger and frustrations had been given an outlet to explode. Although his life in the Navy gave him the control he needed in his life, he soon realized that he missed designing and creating but was just too stubborn to admit the truth.

It was the news of his father’s passing that brought him back to California. Despite their differences, both mother and son gave their relationship a chance. It only worked because Agatha gave Alex a free rein of the business.

He went back to the university to study and concentrated on doing menswear which became known for its immaculate tailoring and cut that gave his pieces a timeless air and classic simplicity.

His bitterness and resentment fuelled his ambition to prove to everyone that he did not need anyone to succeed. After successfully conquering the international market and making Parris not only a household name in America but also in the world, he decided to run his business from London and made it his home base.

Being the only heir, it did not surprise Sutan that Alex would soon take over the family business as Agatha had been showing signs of retiring for the past two years. She finally made true her plans and handed Alex full power to run the business as he saw fit and chose to rest on a remote private island she bought herself for that purpose.

When Sutan was given the permission to enter the office, he saw that Alex was speaking to the important client who was waiting to be shown the pictures for his cologne ad. He strutted like a peacock inside with the confidence of knowing that once the client saw the pictures he took of Adam, he would be blown away.

Sutan was wearing that cocky grin when his prediction was proven true; the two men could not tear their eyes away from the pictures. To Sutan, it was unmistakable that the client’s face had desire written all over it, but with Alex, whose face was devoid of any emotions, he couldn’t quite tell.

As if only realizing that he had to make a decision, Mr. Ryan Seacrest, the client, cleared his throat and was quite embarrassed to be taken aback by what he saw.

“Hmm... It’s hard to pick a favorite. Um... all the pictures wonderfully capture the essence of the cologne, but this one..., pointing to Adam’s face in the last photo, is beckoning you to take a sniff and personally taste the experience.”

“Um, Mr.Seacrest, with all due respect, are you referring to the photo... or the model?” Sutan teased and smiled at the client, flirting with him a little.

A loud chuckle was heard in the room. “Well, I just have to say both. Who is this model anyway? I don’t remember seeing him before.”

Sutan did not want his mishap to be discovered so he answered noncommittally, “He’s new in the biz,” and immediately changed the topic.

“So I take it that you have chosen the picture that you wished to be circulated in all leading magazines to launch your new cologne.”

“Yes. I have to say, I did not make a mistake in bringing my business here with Alex.” Mr. Seacrest said happily while still staring at Adam’s picture.

When Sutan left the office and was out of earshot, Ryan was not anymore embarrassed to say what’s on his mind.

“Wow! This is smoking hot, Alex. You’ve got to introduce me to this model.”

Before Alex could reply, Naomi sashayed into the office and sat on Alex’s lap. The last secretary, who insisted that she wait first so Mr. Kennedy could be informed of her arrival, lost her job.

Naomi Hilton, Alex’s self-declared fiancée, was considered quite a catch. She was a famous British supermodel in her own right who also succeeded in business when she opened her own line of beauty products and diversified into jewellery design. In the fashion industry, Alex and Naomi were considered as one of the few power couples. After meeting for the very first time in one fashion show in London, Naomi had latched onto Alex and after a year since then had never let go.

“Oookay,” Ryan stood up and took the shots for the ad. “I’ll be on my way. It’s nice seeing you again, Naomi.”

“Why don’t you join us for lunch, Ryan?” Naomi offered.

When Ryan did not see any reaction from Alex, he thought it wise not to turn down a lady’s invitation. “I thought you’d never asked.”

As the three walked out of the office, a path seemed to appear magically in front of them as the staff scurried out of their way. To those who dared a quick glance, it was unmistakable that Naomi and Alex were made for each other. They both shared strength in their beauty and power to crush without mercy anything or anyone that would get in the way of getting what they want.
