Citywide Censorship-Thoughts???
Snipped from one of the Bellydance communities that I'm on...
Norfolk is holding a city council meeting tomorrow on belly dancing of all things. Decisions about our rights are being made. They want to ban the use of scimitars, flames, skirts that expose the legs or are semi sheer and coined bras, among other things. They may as well cut the collective heart out of the belly dancing community. They can't do this. Its going to destroy business and cast us in an unfair light.
They called us "adult entertainment" and said they want "tone us down". Absolute bollicks. I need to go to that meeting and speak out against this with the rest of the community. I just need to find out when/where. This will absolutely break my heart if they succeed. They just can't do this to us. They shouldn't be able to accomplish something so ludicrous, especially with places like D.C. and Richmond close by. Those cities have an extremely high belly dancing concentration. I know this may sound silly to some of you, but this is my livelihood thats being threatened. Something has to be done.

One of the other ladies on the board also posted that if Norfolk tries this, then they should start banning how people dress in general. They tried that when I was still living in Louisiana. They tried banning pants that were low cut and showed off your crack and/or your underpants. Personally, that's just nasty! I don't want to see some guys butt hair!!! (esp. if its not my guy...not saying that my guy has butt hair, but thats not the point..tehe) But banning bellydancer garb??? They're Bellydancers!!!!! That's what they wear!!! Like I told a woman at Gulf Wars that had an obvious problem with me being large busted and wearing a coin bra, Don't like it??? Don't look!!!!!
