When are we going back?

"As I take man's last step from the surface, back home for some time to come - but we believe not too long into the future - I'd like to just [say] what I believe history will record - that America's challenge of today has forged man's destiny of tomorrow. And, as we leave the Moon at Taurus-Littrow, we leave as we came and, God willing, as we shall return, with peace and hope for all mankind. Godspeed the crew of Apollo 17."

- Eugene A. Cernan, Apollo 17 Commander. Last man to walk on the moon

It has been 34 years since a human being set foot on another planet. I grew up with the space race in the air, and I like to joke that my conception was bounded by the Apollo program. One of my parents first dates was to watch the orrigional lunar landing and I came along in May of 1972. I wanted to be an astronaut when I was a kid, and remember watching the Columbia land for the first time on television.

It may sound overly patriotic, but I dont think we should leave the future of space exploration to other nations. Space exploration is just too important. Its about time we reclaim the path forged by the Apollo astronauts and return.
