How glad I am that I was not directly involved in the Avalon debacle. Servalan's fury when it all fell apart would have been far less attractive had it been directed at me and not at Travis.
"Why are you so troubled?" I said, "Travis failed. You did not."
"While Blake is free ..." she began, her eyes flashing fire.
"Blake's freedom has its uses. If he becomes enough of a threat, the Administration will have to accept certain security measures, some of which may curtail their activities. And who would be better to enforce emergency measures than the Supreme Commander?"
"You are talking about mutiny, Carnell, even treason." she said.
"Theoretically. Perhaps I am testing you."
"You dare to test me?"
"Have you anything to fear from a test of your loyalty?"
"What am I going to do with you, Carnell?" she asked.
"Since I have not had access to your records, you are one person I cannot predict." I lied, "I am, I fear, at your mercy."
She smiled. "I'm not sure I believe you."
"Uncertainty can be fun." I said.
She left, but her departure was not a rejection. The look she gave me suggested she would soon return.
The game continues, and some moves are more enjoyable than others.
