"I'm doing a line edit on this fucking novel I've been working on for far too long. I'm almost halfway through it and it's sitting at 103,257 words... for now. It's sure to balloon out by at least a couple of thousand more. It's slow going, but I know the story will benefit from me taking the time to do this."

Dunno if I mentioned what Neil Gaiman said at the comicon as the secret to successful writing:
#1: Doing the writing.
#2: FINISHING it.

Just a thought: is a shorter version always better in terms of sending it in for publishing? (And then possibly expanding it later like King did for "The Stand"?) Or longer better?

"After that, I'm planning on moving on to a non-fiction book on the funeral industry"

Sweet. I know it's tough to shove aside energy/time on dream projects, I'm struggling with the same...

I looked up what "apnea" means. I got this:
"Apnea, apnoea, or apnœa (Greek απνοια, from α-, privative, πνεειν, to breathe) is a technical term for suspension of external breathing. During apnea there is no movement of the muscles of respiration and the volume of the lungs initially remains unchanged. Depending on the patency (openness) of the airways there may or may not be a flow of gas between the lungs and the environment; gas exchange within the lungs and cellular respiration is not affected. Apnea can be voluntarily achieved (i.e., "holding one's breath"), drug-induced (e.g., opiate toxicity), mechanically induced (e.g., strangulation), or it can occur as a consequence of neurological disease or trauma."

Does this mean that your breather stopped when you got hooked up? What the heck?

Sorry to hear that the drama continues there.... but then again, I'm more and more convinced unwarranted drama is a global virus at all jobs, no?

If it helps any, reminders:
* 4 DAYS OFF A WEEK? Hell, yah!
* Enough money to support a family and a little extra w/that?

Not the dream job, I know, but those two sound like big pluses....

Glad your family is generally doing well)!

Wish you well on line-editing and on (hint hint) FINISHING the book!!!!
;)

Yeah, I know... lately I've been thinking more and more about writers who don't write and discovered I was doing that very thing.

I feel as if I'm back in the swing of things now though...

Regarding apnea...
It more has to do with you either stopping breathing or a constriction of your airflow WHILE you sleep. It's basically what I've been doing in the Sleep Lab for the last 6-7 years.

It's just ironic that the very thing I treat, I also have.

BTW, I'm planning on giving you a call soon.
I can explain better there... not that I don't want to here, it's just easier to do it via voice.
