Today was meant to be a day off, but then I got a call that one of the last few people I have to interview for the ANIMALS assignment was available. So, I did the interview real quick and then hung out with C and my son who came up for the day. We went out for some pizza and a nice tuna panini. Afterward, I completely sacked out while they watched the REALLY shitty NORBIT. This movie reeked so badly it woke me up.
We're in the middle of a bit of a remodel here at the house and C has been doing a great job pulling it all together. I've been pretty useless as I ended up doing at last count - 13 separate interviews for the ANIMALS gig. The interviewing is the easy part. The transcribing... is another matter.
What else...
My work at the hospital suffers as my attitude goes increasingly sour. In what I do, empathy is everything. You need to really identify with your patients. These days, I see them as victims of their own indulgences: food, liquor, sloth, etc. While I used to be able to put myself in their shoes, I now - after literally starving myself and cutting out most vices - feel the exact opposite. It's hard. I'm never rude; always professional, but... It's one more thing that lets me know that I need to get out of this field.
No movies to report.
I've been slacking; doing transcriptions instead.
Although... I will recommend this amazing documentary called THE BRIDGE.
It's about this film crew who spent a year or so watching and waiting and filming people on the Golden Gate Bridge. The main focus of the film is on why people have this romantic notion that the bridge is the perfect place to commit suicide. The film goes into a bunch of the victims stories and captures a bit of the mindset that leads to suicide. Warning though... there are several scenes of people actually jumping from the bridge and hitting the water.
Short story...
Years ago, when I was in mortuary college, we used to go out and do the pick ups on people who'd jumped. When the Coast Guard couldn't find the bodies, we knew that if you just gave them a day or two, they'd drift down to this channel and there's where you'd find them; bloated, blackened, pockmarked with fish bites. Gruesome stuff... Still fascinating though.
Bookwise, I'm still plugging through Skipp & Spector's ANIMALS.
Next up, I'm not sure what I'll read. I have a stack of books in my To Read pile.
I just have to pick one.
It's funny, as I'm writing this, my son is playing THE DARKNESS game next to me.
All I hear is people screaming and demon voices saying, "Thisssss one is evilllll."
Indeed.
Tomorrow, C and I are planning to get up early and go have breakfast in downtown B'ham. It's Pride weekend and we thought we'd go show our support. I can't imagine what it must be like growing up gay in a town as small as this.
Afterward, it's more transcriptions and then spending some time with C.
Till next time,
