A bitter and animal taste.
My knees give out from under me,
And I collapse beside you-
Broken…
Heaving breaths.
I lick my lips,
My heart hammering.
Your lashes shutter against your cheeks.
I reach out toward the fatal wound…
And my throat tightens.
Your fingers glide over my hand,
A ghostly touch.
I gently clutch your shoulders,
My mind racing for an answer…
A happy one…
Your eyes are distant… glassy.
The words are spilling from my mouth,
Runaway nothings, weightless…
Unable to reverse the pain.
You look at me,
Your distant gaze focusing…
Engulfing me…
Setting me on fire.
Your thumb caresses my lip,
Almost teasing.
You murmur my name,
A dying breath.
My insides constrict and twist,
Aching…
I can see you struggling,
The next words on your tongue-
Merely unfortunate travelers…
Never to find their destination.
Your exhale... is a rush of cold air to my skin.
