I had a horror craving in the last week or two, so I've been searching for some interesting new tales. I found two: both happen to be TV shows.
1. Masters of Horror
Name sounds impressive, doesn't it? I've only watched 4 episodes so far, and they're not bad, but something feels missing. Maybe I haven't come across the right story yet.
Cigarette Burns - A movie-theater director is hired to hunt for the only known print of a film so notorious that its single screening caused the viewers to become homicidally insane.
The best, out of the four. The only other John Carpenter movie I've seen was The Thing, which I loved, although I didn't find it scary, but this one was. It's kind of a surreal horror, not about some monster that's gonna attack you or anything, but madness and darkness from within. It's nauseating. Gory. Disturbing imagery. Left me feeling weirded out at the end. A GOOD HORROR. Also, Norman Reedus.
Incident On and Off a Mountain Road - While driving at night on a lonely mountain road, Ellen is momentarily distracted by the radio and crashes her car. In the woods, she meets Moonface, a deranged killer.
It started out pretty good. Had decent chase scenes. The premise is old but I liked where they were going with the female lead being strong and capable of defending herself. She was kind of like Rambo for a moment there. But then, the twist at the end was too out-of-nowhere and silly. Would have been so much better without the last 10 minutes.
Dreams in the Witch House - A graduate student questions his sanity after he rents a room in an old boarding house where he is haunted by a witch.
Bizarre but OK. Nothing really creepy stood out to me; the witch just looked like a regular old woman, the rat with the human face was kinda gross, and the rest is crying babies. This was also ruined by its ending.
The Fair Haired Child - A mad couple abduct a young teenage girl to sacrifice her to a mysterious and evil entity as an offering to resurrect their long-dead boy.
Terrible. It has great reviews from other people, but just doesn't do it for me. I get the point about the parents trying to justify their actions as being out of love, and the grey morality and all. The stick child was alright, creepy at first but also kind of funny looking. The romance between dead boy and the girl is a total buzz kill though. The ending: again, ridiculous.
2. The Walking Dead
Only three episodes in, but this has started out pretty great. Relatively realistic, interesting mix of characters, icky visual effects. Plot progression is also doing fine, with tight situations and chases. Norman Reedus again! He's suddenly in everything.
