One Hundred Years of Solitude by
Gabriel García Márquez My review
rating: 3 of 5 stars
Garcia Marquez accomplished a great feat with this book - it is apparent that he has created a mythology for the history of Latin America - where the bizarre mixes with the mundane and humans function beyond human capacity. However I also felt (like with other mythologies that I've read: Greek, Roman, Norse, Chinese, etc.) that the significance of the story to the reader lies within that reader's comprehension of the culture from which the myths originated. That is, it is recognizable what Garcia Marquez has accomplished, but the relevance to the reader is directly proportionate to how much Latin American history and culture they know. Since I am only moderately educated in that area, the book felt only moderately relevant to me - otherwise it was loopy and lost me in a few areas... I would recommend it to anyone from Latin America or with an extensive background in Latino culture and history.
