I exist

Well, happy holidays, happy New Year, all that jazz.

So, remember last April when I kinda bitched a bit about getting a car? I'm apparently so used to it that *not* having it around for the past three weeks has been driving me nuts. It's not even in the shop for any real reason; they're trying to find what keeps setting off the "Check Engine" light. It is apparently a problem that will not affect the drivability of the car, but if the light keeps going off, it won't pass emissions. Annoying as hell, and next to impossible to find. Good thing the last of the warranty doesn't run out until April.

Also, I had something of a fandom epiphany earlier:  Super Sentai/Power Rangers is the Japanese/American equivalent of Doctor Who. Think about it:
  • Despite being/Because they are aimed towards children, they have large adult followings that grew up with them.
  • People outside the fans tend to go "Is that still on?" (You should've heard the conversation I had with my dad when I announced this before dinner).
  • Rubber monster costumes.
  • Cheesy, yet can have deep, emotional stories.
  • Constantly changing casts.
  • Have both canon and non-canon movies (Okay, I don't know about the Sentai in this regard, but Power Rangers and Doctor Who do).
  • Every change makes someone claim that "IT'S RUINED FOREVER".
  • Have permanently influenced multiple generations of viewers.
I had more arguments earlier. I cannot remember them at the moment. Instead, I will finish with a Power Rangers meme to remind people of how much of a massive honkin' dork I am.

IF YOU WERE A RANGER, WHAT WOULD YOUR SOUNDTRACK BE?
So, here's how it works:
1. Open your library (iTunes, Winamp, Media Player, iPod, etc.)
2. Put it on shuffle
3. Press play
4. For every question, type the song that's playing (excluding instrumentals)
5. When you go to a new question, press the next button
6. Don't lie and try to pretend you're cool...
7. Tag three people!

I also skipped holiday music and anything that wasn't in English, because if I'm going to snark about the soundtrack, I need to understand more than one out of ten words. No tags, because for all I know, I'm the only person reading this that gives a damn about Power Rangers. Also, I just let my player go and cycled through the list a few times, so I'll list any suspiciously apropos choices from the other times.
  • Opening Credits:  Ever Ever After - Carrie Underwood
    • Y'know, I can actually see this working. It may not have the general "This is gonna be AWESOME!" feel that the best PR themes do, but success against the odds, when everyone *knows* that it only works that way is stories? Isn't that part of what makes Power Rangers great?
  • First Day in Angel Grove:  Down Like Me - Ken Stringfellow
    • ... So I start with a really happy, hopeful song, then move directly to someone committing suicide. I am the Ranger of Mood Whiplash.
  • First Morph:  AC/DC - Jeffrey Daniel (Starlight Express - Original London Cast)
    • I love this song. Does it indicate that morphing has some dehumanising effects? ... Now I want to see fanart of Electra and the Components as Rangers.
  • First Battle:  Stupid Girl - Pink
    • Nothing really to say here, except that this is a great song for a first battle. Why don't I hear about more girls who want to be Power Rangers? There were a lot of us back in the day.
    • Suspiciously Apropos:  Re: Your Brains - Jonathan Coulton
  • School:  Drink With Me - Anthony Crivello (Les Miserables - 10th Anniversary Concert)
    • Surprisingly, I think this one is pretty apt. Once you get past how totally awesome the whole thing is, wouldn't you start to wonder whether you're gonna die doing that shit?
  • Flirting That Will Never Go Anywhere:  I'll Be There For You [Theme from Friends] - Michael Ball
    • Yes, I have a cover of this song. Shut up. It's another surprisingly accurate choice, considering the "Never Go Anywhere" part.
    • Amusing Alternative:  Still Alive - Jonathan Coulton. I think the Turning Evil happened a bit early in this rotation.
  • Life's Okay:  Philosophy - Ben Folds Five
    • ... This isn't really a "LIfe's Okay" song. More a "I deny that there's anything wrong at all" song. A Stepford song? ... Which fits if you think all the Rangers really need a good round of therapy.
    • Suspiciously Apropos:  Don't Stop Me Now - Queen
  • Missed Opportunities:  Those Magic Changes - James Canning (Grease - Original Broadway Cast)
  • Facing Fears:  Very Soft Shoes - Matt Mattox (Once Upon a Mattress - Original Broadway Cast)
  • Turning Evil:  I Dreamed a Dream - Ruthie Henshall (Les Miserables - 10th Anniversary Concert)
    • Tell me you wouldn't be instantly sympathetic to a villain who had this as their theme song.
    • Suspiciously Apropos:  Another One Bites the Dust - Queen
    • Amusing Alternative:  Circle of Life - Elton John. I apparently suck at being evil.
  • Teamwork:  I Won't Say (I'm In Love) - Susan Egan (Disney's Hercules)
    • This has nothing to do with teamwork. You disappoint me, iTunes.
  • Team Up:  Life - Our Lady Peace
    • I also got I'll Be There for You here on a later cycle; I want to see a vid for the Once a Ranger veterans to that.
  • Random Plothole:  Not the Messiah - William Ferguson (Not the Messiah (He's a Very Naughty Boy))
    • Best. Plothole. Ever.
  • Final Battle:  No Time - The Monkees
  • End Credits:  Jump in the Line - Harry Belafonte
    • Why are my opening and ending songs so bouncy, when most of the rest of the soundtrack is so damn depressing?
