Il n'y a qu'un seul type d'amour Oscar, ce l'amour de la douleur...
Oscar François de Jarjayes is für immer my favorite character. The Passionate, loyal and forever noble in all senses most intense woman that could only be an anime in the times near the French Revolution.
Her father being in despair for never receiving a boy as a son, a boy that could inherit the position the Jarjayes family as as Military man, decided to raise the 7th of his daughters, minutes after she was born, as a man. A tragic moment indeed... the beginning of an intense story...
Years go by and one day, when she's 14 years old, she's assigned to take care of the future Queen, later she becomes the commander of the Royal Guard and responsible for the safety of the Queen of France, Marie Antoinette, as well as the rest of the royal family.
This anime, Versailles no Bara, wasn't only about this amazing woman, it was rich in history facts that were really useful in understanding how people lived and the way they suffered under the monarchy, but it wasn't only that, it even showed you a part of the queen's life that made you feel sorry for her. It was kind of like greek tragedy, there was nothing anybody could have done to change their fate or something like that.
The sad, sad nice good friend she had, André, and his emotions, his devoted love to his lovely and strong but at the same time confused Oscar. A tragic story of love among other things. This fabulous character will still your heart, of that I'm sure.
She's so strong, so noble an loyal, so different from any human being and yet so fragile, what makes her human, so beautiful and honest like any hero should be. She's simply amazing.
The way she tried to save André's life was incredible, offering her's if he wasn't forgiven.... Unique! What noble would do that just for a servant? Contradicting the same King she was supposed to obey without asking why. The way she changes about the Queen has something special, first seeing her as a disturbance, a silly child (which was probably true in those firsts days) to see her as a potential good queen, a noble woman, and then when their friendship has to come to a sad end, when she decides she has to stick for the people and there's just no way out. It is really sad, I meant it.

The story is so good that even today there are plays of it each year. It's hard to explayn how good Oscar is, confused some times, eager of Justice and of Love when she reaches the age, but at the same time not knowing exactly how to manage her feelings, being a woman that was raised to be a man, furthermore, a military man.
Should I say more? Don't know... I just love here a lot, she's wonderful. Thank you Ryoko Ikeda! What could we have done without you?
Ryoko Ikeda wrote this manga in 1973! Shueisha's Margaret Magazine was the first place where this manga came to be known. The Manga contains 10 volumes:
1. Atarashii unmei no uzu no naka ni
2. Eikou no za ni yoishirete
3. yurusarezaru koi
4. Kuroi kishi wo toraero
5. Osukaru no kurushimi
6. Moeagaru kakumei no hi
7. Utsukushiki ai no chikai
8. Kami ni mesarete (1972) - Mizukara no eranda michi wo (1994)
9. Itamashii ouhi no saigo (1972) - Kami ni mesarete (1994)
10. Gaiden: Kokui no hakushakuhujin
Four more gaidens were published in Jam Magazine in June 1984.
And it was made an anime, it's hard to say this but I couldn't read any more than the first volume. But the day will come when I get my hands in the other volumes. I'm not so sure about this gaidens but maybe if some day I come across with one I could read it, coz when you are a fan you never get tired of knowing more about your favorite character.
Je t'aime Oscar!
