Today I watched the long-anticipated (well I was anticipating it), P.S. I Love You. It was a beautiful movie, but the only thing I hated about it.. is they didn't follow the book. Basically, most of the audience watch the movie, cause they loved the book and want to see how it appears on the big screen. Unfortunately, only disappointment awaits the book's lovers. They changed quite alot. They changed the number of siblings Holly had, her mother's own name.. and ALOT more other things, which contributes to the plot. The movie is also Americanized.. because the book was set in Ireland.
Other than that, the casting was okay i guess. Lisa Kudrow was the perfect Denise! Hot and b!tchy. All of their performances were also quite good, except for Daniel (Harry Connick Jr.). His face expresses the same expression throughout almost the whole movie. In the book, he's suppose to OWN the pub. But then in the movie, Holly's mother (Kathy Bates) owns the pub. Her sister Ciara (Nellie McKay)'s so playful! But not as rebellious as the one in the book. Holly's mum, Patricia always had something against Gerry. In the end, she mentioned she will respect whatever Holly does from then on.
The love between Holly (Hilary Swank) & Gerry (Gerard Butler) was so deep and intimate, I could feel Holly's pain and sadness, although I have not experienced having my husband dead (I'm not even married!). Hilary really acted out all the sadness and devastation inside of Holly's character. And the moment when they first met, was a very cute scene. The weird thing is, they made her sleep with another of Gerry's best friend in the movie!
Denise, Sharon (Gina Gershon) & Holly's friendship touched me. They settled out all their differences and didn't care whether the other one Denise & Sharon did everything they could to cheer Holly up. And when Holly felt jealous of Denise & Sharon.. she ignored them, their calls etc. But at the end, they remained the best of friends.
Letters, is a great idea by Cecilia Ahern. Ohmygosh in the book, after reading that Holly opened the December letter, I felt so sad I almost cried, but I held my tears back! But when I watched the movie, Holly let Daniel open the letter instead so that he'll read it. I didn't even feel like crying. I think the setting was too un-romantic (Yankees Stadium). Then they kissed, and felt that they weren't suitable for each other. LOL I found that particular scene really awkward..
Additional Scenes
There were some additional scenes which they filmed, but decided not to put in the movie:
I don't really know what Ciara's doing.. she's acting out some very awkward ritual I guess? She ate the watermelon and spit the seeds on everyone.
This part was when Gerry went to the travel agency to get the Ireland tickets for Holly & her girlfriends. The clerk, Barbara became so touched when she knew that Gerry was going to die. Then Gerry pretended to choke and die in front of her on the desk. She fell for it, but afterwards he apologized and said it was a joke. When he leaves, he once again tricks the lady, and falls on the ground. But the lady said, "I'm not even paying attention". then Gerry replied while on the floor, "I thought that was a little bit too much myself". That scene was funny! I would've loved if they put it in the movie.
Since Holly found out that Sharon was pregnant, and Denise was getting marred.. she ignored them to avoid getting hurt. She visits John (James Marsters) and then Sharon came out telling her that she was going to name the baby Gerry, and Holly can be his godmother. Holly was very touched and the friends hug. Then John found a letter from Gerry in his guitar case. In the letter, Gerry wishes him Happy Birthday. The scene between Sharon & Holly IS in the book.
Overall, I give the movie a.................. 4/5 stars. Hehe maybe I'm biased cause i really love the book!
That's it :D Hope you enjoy my opinion on P.S. I Love You.
