And my favorite stories from 2010:

The Book of Love (Angel, Charles Gunn, PG)

In the offices, Wes and Fred have fallen into the kind of arguments only NASA is used to hearing, bandying twelve-syllable words about in defense of their preferred organizational styles. Gunn started dusting and organizing the weapons cupboard, but gradually lapsed into seeing if he can teach himself to use nun chucks. Angel and Cordelia’s reorganization of the lobby furniture somehow devolved into the two of them collapsed over the couch, limbs intertwined in a cattish display of shared languor.

Gunn deserved better than what Joss & Co gave him, and I am also very interested in The Book of Love and The Book of Peace and The Book of Death, the idea that there are these huge, mythic tomes out there that contain everything.

Marrow (Thunderheart, Ray Levoi/Walter Crow Horse, NC-17)

Ray lifted his face, and waited to be kissed. Walter indulged him, threading a hand through Ray’s hair, cradling Ray’s skull in the palm of his hand. This made one less hand to hold Crow Horse’s weight, and slowly he gave it to Ray to bear, settling along his body by inches. The familiar force of Crow Horse’s body weighing down upon his pinned Ray to the bed, sinking him further into the plush of the mattress. The veil of Crow Horse’s hair all around him, the blanket of his body atop him; Ray was made an island, a country solely Walter’s domain.

Walter stripped Ray’s shorts from him. After all this time, Ray was still overwhelmed by the reverence with which Walter touched him, looked at him; like he was a sacred object. More than he had ever wanted anything, Ray wanted to be worthy of that reverence.

I really enjoyed spending so much time with the boys, and I really like the way the story turned out, too. It had a plot, and my first ever NC-17 m/m slash, and I got to talk about a lot of different things.

A Man of Wealth and Taste (Tombstone, Doc Holliday/Johnny Ringo, PG-13)

You don’t make a deal with the devil and not ask for anything in return. What Ringo really wanted was an end to the hunger, but he didn’t know how to say it, so instead he asked for good hands. There were tales from far east-way beyond the coast of Boston and Philadelphia, which was pretty damn far east in Ringo’s estimation-about wishes, and the mistakes you made when the genie was smarter than you, but Ringo’d never been much for stories. It was a real shame, because he could have used the advice. If he still had to be hungry, he wanted the best hands, but he wasn’t careful when he asked and it turned out, like in that goddamn Snow White story-not that Ringo was one for stories-that his wish had only made him second best. Holliday, by nature, without ever giving anything up, was better and faster and it was just a goddamn shame that Ringo hadn’t been careful, because now his hunger just grew, and he wanted to swallow the whole world so long as Doc Holliday got swallowed up, too.

I love Doc Holliday, and I love writing myth, and the two came together here.

Bone Deep (Thunderheart, Ray Levoi/Walter Crow Horse, PG-13)

Ray’s hands ached like they were broken. He cupped them and filled his palms with his own breath, but it wasn’t much warmer than the air sputtering from the cruiser’s vents. He rubbed them together, then stuck them in his coat pockets, but it was colder in there; the artificial material did not hold the heat. Teeth chattering, Ray stuck his hands between his thighs, hoping for enough warmth to at least ease the pain of a six degree January morning with no fucking gloves.

“Hey, chief,” Crow Horse said, peering at him from over the tops of his Raybans. “I’m paying you to nab speeders, not to play with yourself.”

Seriously, how can you guys not love them?
