Uh so yeah, I was sitting in my car at a red light on 27th and Layton at 10:35ish last night.  Crazy car goes flying by, followed by about 10 of Milwaukee's finest.  CRAZY.  Then I went home after my 14 hours workday.  That was the most exciting event though of the day.  FRIDAY, Nov. 9, 2007, 0:06 a.m.

45-minute chase ends in arrest

A traffic stop for a suspicious vehicle turned into a lengthy police chase Thursday night on Milwaukee's south side.
A 32-year-old man from Cudahy was arrested after the 45-minute chase, which reached speeds of nearly 80 mph in some spots on Chase, Howell and Layton avenues.

"When they apprehended him, he said he felt he could get away," said District 6 Lt. Karl Robbins, who expects the man to be charged with fleeing and eluding police, a felony. "It didn't appear he was under anything, he just felt like it was time to have the police chase him."

The chase started at S. 27th St. and W. Layton Ave. around 10:18 p.m., when officers were called to a suspicious vehicle in a neighborhood, Robbins said. When police approached the black Buick, the driver fled.

According to police radio transmissions, the driver zig-zagged north, south, east and west across major and minor streets, ignoring some red lights and stop signs along the way. A 6th District police officer calmly followed the man and called out the locations on his police radio.

At one point, the suspect's car blew a rear tire on S. 27th St., just north of where the chase had started, but he made a U-turn and continued north - the tire's rim sparking on the pavement, according to the police radio.
The chase ended around 11 p.m. at 6th St. and W. Layton Ave., where the driver was taken into custody without incident.
