It was a game of not many highlights for us Carlton faithful. Can everyone say flogged?
CARLTON: 2.3, 2.6, 2.7, 6.8 (44)
SYDNEY: 5.1, 9.3, 15.9, 21.10 (136)
It wasn't for lack of trying, however. As far as I saw it today, our forwards didn't have much chance. The flooding was atrocious. Fev often had to combat against 4 or more Sydney players. You could see the growing frustration and he was dragged a couple of times, Pagan no doubt telling him to cool it off. Though, when he had his opportunities he only managed to capitalise 1 from 4 times. An anti-climax for the now official Coleman Medalist.
Every time they put the stats up, Carlton players were dominating. We always had 2 to 4 players in the top 5 mark, disposals, and possession getters.
A definite highlight of the day was Setanta O'hAilpin. With every game you can see the bloke learning the game, and he dominated today. It's quote plain to see the Irish Experiment will pay dividends in the future.
When it comes to Barnaby, no one says it better than the man himself, Denis Pagan:
"Pagan also paid tribute to ruckman Barnaby French after the game, who announced his retirement from the game at the club's team meeting on Friday.
"Well, I just think Barnaby's been terrific," Pagan said.
"It's not about what talent footballers possess, it's what you do with it, and he's battled as hard as anyone who's played the game and tried to do as much as he possibly can.
"You know people wouldn't realise the toll it takes, you know playing with Carlton at the moment when we're going through what we're going through.
"You might come here today and have a fleeting thought about it but when you're a player and you've got to come to training and get yourself up and battle injury and come up again and know that you're going to be undermanned every time you run out, it's very hard.
"And I really take my hat off to Barnaby because he's never stopped trying … he can walk tall and carry himself proud." "
You can't help but be excited by the thought that we have pick 1 in what is set to be a phenomenally deep draft talent wise. To think we'll be acquiring a player who is rumoured to be even better than the freak that is Marc Murphy is a very exciting prospect indeed. Blue horizons are ahead.
Carlton's season may be over, but the same cannot be said for the Ants, who suffered an upset at the hands of Williamstown yesterday during the 1st Qualifying Final.
NORTHERN BULLANTS: 4.5 8.6 11.12 12.13 (85)
WILLIAMSTOWN: 2.3 4.7 9.10 19.16 (130)
However, this can hardly be considered cause for alarm. The Bullants had quite a number of players out due to injuries and those who had to play with Carlton today. Next week will see a vast change in the side, to the tune of a minimum 9 players.
