Chapter 6 -
With a bit of confusion, the group settles down and begins to ask questions. The Shaman of the small people, referring to themselves as Mites, agrees to read the history of their great Kings. She goes through the great deeds of their kings, back to the first in which "The Creator" made first the queen by breaking off a portion of his soul and imbuing her with it. Because she was lonely, he made a king for her by taking of the Big Souls and making him a mite. Unlike the queen, the king could die, so whenever the time comes that a king dies, the warriors venture out and seek a new king among the Big Souls. The crew realizes that this means that the missing boy is now trapped as the king of the Mites, but he has no recollection of being anything other than an immortal Mite.
Guillermo convinces the King that he should go out into the world and perform great deeds to make his soul big and worthy of the Queen who awaits for him in the upper chamber. During this conversation, Phineas realizes that there is a being within and composed of the fire. He begins to converse with the Fire-Soul and after a short while is asked by the being to "Take me with you" in agreement they shake hands and Phineas hand is permanently scarred with the imprint of his fingers.
After attempting to free the Fire-Soul with a blast of gun powder while the rest of the group makes their way up the ramp. Phineas remembers the words of his mentor-witch, "There is much power in names" and thus calls forth the Fire-Soul onto a torch in his hand and makes a hasty escape, with Ignatius blowing the tunnel, collapsing it behind him.
They remove the necklace from the king of Mites and he transforms back into the missing boy, with no memory of being a Mite. The group treks through the wilds and makes it back to town. Amari meets up with the Wandering Moon-Brother who says he has a vision quest to go on, and Amari wanders off with him.
The next morning bears no wind so they decide to investigate the rumors of the wailing woman in the woods. After investigation into the deepest, darkest section of the forest, the crew encounters some luminous birds that mimic human speech and sound. Gui constructs a small cage and they manage to catch one of the birds and then leave the forest. They encounter Amari on the road, who they send to town to recover their long boat, choosing to keep the mystery of the wailing woods alive.
They then make their way back to Galdabar where Droreg goes and finds Alomar, asking him about the Necklace and learning that it bestows powers on the wearer based on the phase of the moon. Phineas goes to see the Sea Witch to show her the Fire-Soul and tell her of how he was able to predict a storm based on watching the flight of a flock of seagulls. Ignatius spends some time in a stable Laboratory constructing some things. Cassandra tumbles about on the deck with the Hadozee, learning their methods of nimble tumbling. Amari spends some time in quiet contemplation. Guillermo sits down with his maps and navigation tools. Based on the Compass readings they were able to make he calculates that their next destination lies somewhere with-in the dreaded Teeth of Mortis...
