I am Mexican

Mexico is full of contrast.

Yesterday I went to a posada (mexican christmas season parties) in the Richest neighborhood in Guadalajara. Even for my friend Dave from Australia, it was astonishing. Each of the homes there is at least worth 500k. In every driveway, you see Porsche, Audi, BMW, Acura, and why not, let's throw in 1 Lambo and 2 Ferraris I saw on the way to my friend's house. Hell, Guadalajara's Scuderia Mondiale (Ferrari, Maserati and Alfa Romeo dealership) is inside the subdivision. The nearby grocery store carries a fine selection of wines, imported foods, deli meats... a starbucks and fancy sushi restaurant is just around the exit. Inside, they're building Puerta de Hierro Boulevard, which will have stores like Gucci, LV, Chanel, etc.

But less than a mile away, people are living in poverty. Some make just the minimum wage... which was just increased a 3.4 percent, from 47.16 pesos per day, to 48.76 pesos ($4.50 at the current exchange rate). Oh, and they'll predict inflation will go up 7% this year. Fan-fucking-tastic. Well, lets not even go that far, but with the current job I have, which is pretty damn good for a student here, I still make less per month than someone in the US makes per week at burger king flipping burgers. I honestly don't understand how the country's economy is working, buy i hope it gets fixed soon. Crazy.

Recently, the new president took office, after a really close race. Last week, he sent 6,000 troops to the state of michoacan, where drug dealers have killed about 1,200 people in execution style shootings and beheadings. So far they've found about 1,700 marihuana plantations, and captured 2 leaders of drug cartels. It'll be interesting to see what happens with this new president's law and order rules.
