In other news, my words are officially eaten: Boardwalk Empire is pretty damn good.
I mean, it's still kind of trying to live up to its predecessors within a certain tradition of HBO programming with a certain sort of protagonist, but it's developed its own exciting little quirks, and I think I've nearly figured out who's trying to double-cross whom.
Also, Chalky White.
And one day, I will have properly organized thoughts on exactly how Nucky Thompson is a very different kind of villain-protagonist than Al Swearengen, because you could damn well believe for a while that they're the same sort of thing, but... not.
(The short version has something to do with the fact that Nucky is very invested in being a gentleman devil; not just his class-obsession, which is utterly un-Al-like [cf. "Yeah, I'm related to all them cocksuckers."], but a certain perverse form of chivalry -- he'll lie and cheat and mutilate corpses and order things done to people, but a lot of his self-worth is bound up in looking out for his own and not raising his fists to the powerless.
Also, Al would never ever in a million bajillion years have gotten involved with [spoiler].)
