On thursday, I took a half day of work because we had a doctor appointment for H at 2:00 and a "get to know you" appointment with our pediatrician at 5:00. We also had dinner plans with my law school roommate that evening. I picked H up from work and proceeded to her appointment with the OB. Her doctor was on vacation so a nurse practitioner checked her out. The nurse said she was 1cm dilated (that's not much at all) and 100% effaced. She said nothing was happening labor-wise and said that we'd see the doctor next week. When H pressed her, she said if she had to guess, H would go after her due date (August 25).

Boy is her face red.

A scant two hours later I was getting stuff together to go to the pediatrician when H called for me from upstairs. She said she had a big gush of water. I asked her if she thought her water had broke and she said she did not think so. I, of course, had no doubt but knew I had to deal with a woman in both labor and denial. I suggested she call the doctor and the doctor told her to perhaps go to the hospital, just in case.

I began to frantically and haphazardly throw things into bags but H was very relaxed and packing slowly. We arrived at the hospital at around 6:00 and by 7:30, the contractions which had not been present only two hours before were about two minutes apart. Something needs to be said about this. In all of the books, classes, etc. they told us that "early labor" would be from 12 - 24 hours long and there would be contractions ten or twenty minutes apart and we would have plenty of time to pack, shower, etc. while waiting for active labor. This never happened. H. went from nothing to active labor in less than two hours.

To make a long story short (I'm sparing your the horrific details of the herculean effort made by my wife through well over three hours of pushing (normal is a half to two hours), my daughter, Lila Robyn was born at 6:12am on Friday, August 15, 2008. She was seven pounds, eleven ounces and 20 1/4 inches at birth.

She's the most beautiful baby in the world and looks like her mother (lucky for her). Both Lila and H are doing very well.
