Carl stared at the Magic Eight Ball as he leaned back in his chair, feet propped up on his desk.

“Okay, ball,” he muttered to the toy, “Show me what you’ve got.  Odds of Shirley dropping me by the Spring.”  He shook the thing and then made a face at the answer.  “Too soon to tell? What kind of crap answer is that?”

Stephen found himself walking around Crane, Poole, and Schmidt, a habit he had become quite fond of as of late. On the way to pour himself a third cup of coffee he noticed Carl Sack walking in the opposite direction. Not one to let the other by without making some kind of comment, Stephen called chipperly, "Happy New Year, Mr. Sack!"

Carl gave a polite smile. "Happy New Year, Stephen."

Still feeling quite beside himself with happiness for the upcoming year Stephen asked, "Did you notice that I didn't call you Baby Carrot?"

"I did." Carl kept smiling. Just keep trying, he told himself, just keeeep trying.

Overflowing with questions, he continued. "Where are you going? Your office is in the other direction you know."

"Yes, thank you for informing me," Carl said. "I'm going to check on people, make sure work is getting done."

"In the meantime, you aren't getting work done" Stephen felt the need to reply.

"My job is keeping others in line." Carl wasn't phased.

"So why do you have a desk?" The prodding wasn't over.

[carl_sack_esq]

"It's not -all- I do," Carl muttered.

[mr_colbert]

Stephen gave a small chortle. "Oh that's right. You Google yourself too."

"...that, too." Carl smirked. "And what are -you- doing here?"

[mr_colbert]

"Only dropping in to see my favorite people who aren't me," Stephen looked on either side of Carl. "Are Alan and Denny around?"

"Probably," Carl shrugged, disinterested in Crane or Shore at the moment. They'd both been giving him headaches lately and he hardly wanted to think about them when he didn't have to.

"That's it?" Stephen asked, annoyed. "You're not much help to me right now. I thought you knew things."

"Just because I don't tell you what I know doesn't mean I don't know things," Carl replied.
