End of First Year at Uni LJ post

This is a mega post. If you don’t have a spare 5 minutes I’ll save you the read.

Well I’m done packing, at long last and I thought I’d try and give a quick over view of what has been and amazing year hear at Reading.

It started badly. Me and Kirsty were met by a horrible halls building and horrible rooms. We felt like we’d been sent to prison and a combination with this and feeling homesick, we didn’t really wanna be here. But once Freshers week was underway we had so many activities to enjoy we quickly forgot about our crappy rooms, which once you whack a few posters up they begin to feel like home.

When I left Stevenage Woolworths a manager said the key thing to do was join as many societies as possible. I did join a lot, but with societies such as Rock soc and student bands I took no involvement. There was one I took a lot of involvement with. Wildly I chose to help out the Liberal Democrats. Free drinks will do a lot to encourage you to join a society. Now I’m President of the society and have helped in two successful election campaigns. Hopefully at Freshers week next year we will get more members to join and become active.

Other cool things that’s have happened here are meeting Good Charlotte which was such a unique experience. Also winning the Hinder competition just two weeks after and getting an ipod at the event.

People say, why go to University, the University of life is far more important and its cheaper. Well as I’ve discovered that’s bollocks. University teaches you so much life experience with a safety net if things go wrong, a degree to help you go further and you have a fantastic time.

My biggest success this year has to be my role in Student Radio show, Junction 11. I started off last term just reading the national news on the news show, which meant an hour round trip to read the news. All the effort paid off eventually and I was trained to use all the equipment and software. Then out of no where I got an interview with Trivium over the Easter Holidays. It was brilliant meeting a band I like and the feedback I got from Friends Dan and Luke were really cool. The Trivium interview was really popular with the radio station and as a result I got more involved with the music shows on the station. Just recently I was selected to work the media run at the Metal Hammer Awards, getting to meet legends such as Tony Iommi, Ronnie James Dio and Nikki Sixx to name a few. On top of this I am now co-hosting one of the most popular radio shows on the radio station. Liam and Carls Happy hour scores numbers of listeners, so look out for it next year. And finally to top things off… I am now assistant station manager. This will be a lot of work but if I do it well I can really make a name for myself here at the uni and in the radio world.

To wrap things up, despite all the fun I’ve had this year, I’m so exited to be on my way home. I can wait to see my family and all my friends this Summer. It’s gonna be fun.

See you all soon

Carl

PS I do now look like a tramp you have been warned.
