wine review: ratafia

Nov 28, 2007 09:37

Last night after auditions we went to Barbette and had a lovely dinner of mussels steamed in white wine, shallot and lemon broth, nicoise salad, pommes frites with saffron oil and a well paired bottle of burgundy.

Then for desert we tried a glass of ratafia.

Sometimes you taste or smell something which pushes all the other senses aside .  Sight, speech and thought take a back seat to the completely in-the-moment experience of it touching your lips (the last time I lost my mind to food was with this cake).  Served in a smart cordial glass, it's first aroma was of citrus rind, followed by allspice and clove.  It was surprisingly sly, and stopped me mid-sentence.  The first sip and swirl was complex and layered with sweetness and spice, and its finish seemed to never end.  Breathtaking.

5 out of 5 stars.
