Well, now I know why the heater in my room didn't work.
It stopped working sometime last winter, and I never quite got 'round to taking it apart to figure out why... as long as I turn the heat all the way up, the little heater (about a foot long) worked well enough to keep me from freezing, and I don't spend a lot of time in here anyway.
Well, in my continuing efforts to re-build my condo so I can sell it eventually, I ripped apart the old heater to install a new one. Turns out that, at some point, water got into the casing, and a connection appears to have melted. Not a good thing, but at least it didn't burn the house down.
Anyway... now I have a new heater, and installation wasn't as hard as I expected, though having the right tools might have helped.

And yes, it is in fact smoking. And it smells really, really bad...
