Citing My Source

In researching Ginsberg, I discovered he often used certain stylistic elements. In addition to gaining inspiration from a specific poem, I also attempted to use some of the techniques he was known for in my fic.

They are as follows:

Anaphora - The repetition of the same word or group of words at the beginning of several consecutive sentences or verses to emphasize an image or a concept (Wikipedia).

Used in fic as follows: The sum of two days missing, two days unconscious and two weeks in the hospital had left her so weak and frail he found it difficult to believe she had the energy to be curious.

Catachresis - Incorrect or improper use of a word (Wikipedia).

Used loosely in fic as follows: Easing the car to a stop at the exit drive of the hospital, he turned to look at Sara, the back of her head resting against the rain soaked passenger window, a questioning stare aimed in his direction.

In the above sentence, "drive" is used as a noun, which is uncommon unless "driveway" is used.

Eyeball Kick - Paratactical juxtaposition of two starkly dissimilar images.

Used loosely in fic as follows: Shuddering, he blinked to erase the haunting image of Sara’s slender frame trapped beneath the heavy car, her inner strength bearing all of its weight.

In the above sentence, I was attempting to create an image that emphasizes the sharp contrast between the size/weight of Sara and the car.

Long Line - Ginsberg frequently used long sentences in his poetry. You likely noticed my fic had several long sentences throughout.

I read several of Ginsberg's poems in seek of a story idea. This one provided the spark I needed: Do We Understand Each Other
