There's plenty of post-Derby articles to read right now, such as Calvin Borel going to Washington to have
dinner with W and the Queen, and speculation about who will win the upcoming
Preakness. Here's nice Louisville Courier-Journal
article about Carl becoming only the 18th trainer to win more than one Derby.
And Carl won two Derbies in only three tries: Unbridled in 1990, Vicar in 1999 (he finished 18th), and Street Sense in 2007. Current leading trainer Todd Pletcher started five horses in this year's Derby alone, for a grand total of 19 Derby starters since 2000, and he has not been able to pull off a win.
Speaking of numbers, how do you like the number seven? Carl chose the seven post position in part because of advice he got from a 14 year old kid, Brody Wilkes. Brody is the son of Ian and Tracey Wilkes, longtime assistants to Carl. This year's Derby was the 133rd, and Brody pointed out that 1+3+3=7.
And the year of course is '07.
Also, Unbridled was number seven when he won the Derby back in 1990.
To top things off, the Pick Six at Churchill on Derby Day was 7-7-7-3-7-7
