Here's a few more Derby photos
In the paddock before the race, Carl, jockey Calvin, asst. trainer Ian Wilkes, and Street Sense's owner Jim Tafel were confident and happy. They all took time to enjoy the moments before the Derby, though they look serious here, I heard them laughing out loud a minute after I took this photo. The laughs were just pure joy, enjoying the opportunity that was before them. I looked around at the other trainers/owners/jockeys and no one was laughing, they were too nervous I'm sure.
Once Carl gave Calvin a leg up and they headed out, horse and rider nearly disappeared in the crowd......
And when Calvin rode by the crowd, a large roar ensued as everyone was cheering for Street Sense and Calvin. There was no question who the crowd favorite was.
We raced through the grandstand to get to our box as quickly as we could...we missed the full effect of "My Old Kentucky Home" but that's ok...here is our first view of the post parade upon reaching our box...Street Sense is on the right side of the photo below, just above the lady's white hat. You can see Street Sense's pony wearing a blue bandage and a yellow bandage on his front legs...
I didn't take any photos during the race, but here is Carl afterwards, heading to the winner's circle....he was looking for Wanda, who got separated from him in the melee after the race. It was an absolute MESS trying to get to the track, but we managed to get through the crowd.
to be continued....
