My favorite male Idol contestant: Blake Lewis.
He's the guy who does the beatbox stuff. We hardly heard his voice during the auditions and early rounds, I figured he was just a one dimensional novelty. But I often check the message board tally at americanidol.com, each contestant has a folder and there is a running total of how many postings to each folder. Last year, Taylor Hicks had the most messages by far throughout the competition. This year I was surprised to see Blake far in front right away, as soon as the folders were created for this year. That means, of course, Blake has a huge following and that translates into votes.
Blake's performance, though not perfect, showed he has far more experience than the others and he is very appealing. My second favorite of the boys is now Chris Richardson. I took note of him during the auditions when he sang Leon Russell's "A Song For You", and wrote about him in this blog on January 25th. Chris Richardson is not getting much action on the Idol message boards, though.
Chris Sligh is in second place in the Idol Message Board Derby, but I believe he is on shaky ground. Chris stated he wanted to make good song choices, yet I think he blew it with his song choice. He also may outsmart himself with his overuse of humor.
Sanjaya is a disaster, though he'll make it another few rounds due to his hair.
Sundance is close to the precipice, I feel bad for him as we all thought he would do better. Looking back, Simon didn't do him any favors by anointing him into the top 12, it put heat on Sundance that he hasn't been able to weather.
Here's the performance that made Blake my favorite guy contender.
