Yeah, I'm still alive.
And back in the States.
I left Korea on Memorial Day weekend. The flights (Korea > Chicago > Detroit > Erie) were not too bad, although the 12-hour trek from Korea to Chicago made my back scream.
Visited family in Pennsylvania for a couple days, which was nice. Spent a lot of that time hanging out with my brother Toby and my future brother-in-law. Mostly just catching up on things. Turns out my brother's going for an English degree and doing some sportswriting as well, which was very cool to talk about, given my previous experiences with that.
After PA, it was a couple days in Boston to visit my best friend, his wife and their new daughter. Fun visit; drank with my best friend, saw a Red Sox game at Fenway and went to the Museum of Fine Arts, where my buddy works. Thanks to him, I was able to get in the MFA for free. Due to tornado warnings in the area, I saw pretty much the whole museum over my 5-hour visit. Whew.
Got back in MI in time to se my brother Chris graduate from high school. His open house was the next day, so we had lots of family and friends come over, so I got to see a lot of people upon my return, which was great.
Now I am working part-time (extremely part-time) as an English tutor. The pay rate is great for this job (25/hour) but I have no students at this time; we are discussing starting a group for me, but many of the potential students are traveling this summer, so it's not much at the moment.
I'm looking into teaching certification programs right now; old HS friends in GA have alerted me to a good program there which would allow me to work (and get paid) as a full-time teacher while taking courses on the weekends to earn my teaching credentials in GA. I'm also checking out Indiana, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan too. Also checking into tutoring and other opportunities for the time being. I'm starting to go stir crazy after 3 weeks at home, so it's time to get back to work.
If I decide to return to Korea, I would certainly be able to do so. My former school gave me a letter of recommendation and I would be able to teach English at the college level as well. So that remains possible if things don't work out here.
And I'll try to update a bit more frequently.
I'm not dead.
