Music is absolutely one of my favorite things, so I'm thrilled to see this challenge!

My dad sang show tunes in his high school choir, so I grew up hearing and singing them myself. Paint Your Wagon, Oklahoma!, The Sound of Music, Mary Poppins... I loved them all from a very young age. My earliest memories of music and my mom are listening to Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, Elvis Presley, and Johnny Cash. I didn't get into modern pop music until the 1990s.

Before that, though, I was in MY high school choir, and we did a lot of Renaissance music a capella. I still adore a capella music, but it's something I enjoy participating in more than listening to other people do it. There's just something about standing in a choir, surrounded by the music and other people singing it with you. (I was an alto, and I'm still likely to find myself singing along to the alto parts of the chords, even in pop music. The people around me find that kinda strange.)

In the 1990s, I got very heavily into Counting Crows. What can I say, all of Adam Duritz's songs about insomnia really resonated with me that decade! Counting Crows, Hootie and the Blowfish, Blues Traveler... those were my favorite bands of that decade.

I've gotten more into folk music and folk-influenced music since then. I found Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer, and got back into Paul Simon and Mary Chapin Carpenter.

These days, I've been listening to a lot of music on the line between rap and spoken word poetry. (If I remember the story correctly, Leonard Cohen started out as a poet, but found more people would listen to him if he put it to music. So he did.) My absolute favorite right now is Guante, especially the album he did with Big Cats called An Unwelcome Guest. I've been listening to that on repeat for the last week or so, I love it so much.

... It's weird, the difference that a few months makes. I was so devastated by the deaths of David Bowie and Prince, both of whom are artists I adore and whose work I've listened to immensely. I wouldn't have thought I could talk about music without talking about them and the impact they had on my tastes, but looking back at this comment, I guess I did.

I sang in choir in college, but it was more laid-back than I wanted. Then again, I didn't have time for the competition a capella group at that point, either. I've thought about getting back into it since then, but life keeps getting in the way.

Ah yes, most of the girls wanted to be sopranos! There were only four of us in second alto -- I definitely didn't have the range for soprano, but my low range was great -- but we held our own. I really think some of it is the mindset. Altos have to be able to pick out the harmony parts instead of the melody, so a lot of people find the soprano parts easier to hear in their mind.

Ooh, that's a hard one. Okay, let's try my top three:

Anna Begins. I love Counting Crows as a band, and I love the way they play off each other and riff through the songs -- and this is definitely a good performance.

Up All Night. *hugs this song* It captures for me that feeling when it's almost dawn and you've been awake waaaay too long but it feels like everything is possible.

Kid Things , which makes me get up and dance every single time I hear it.
