Favourite book read in 2014?
I can't choose just one. My 5 star books so far this year, in no particular order, are The Silkworm (Cormoran Strike, #2) by Robert Galbraith aka JK Rowling, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou, Razor's Edge (Star Wars: Empire and Rebellion, #1) by Martha Wells, Ancillary Justice (Imperial Radch, #1) by Ann Leckie, Code Name Verity & Rose Under Fire (Code Name Verity, #1 & 2) by by Elizabeth Wein, Fledgling by Octavia Butler, The Golem and the Jinni by Helen Wecker, and The Martian by Andy Weir

Have you ever read a book and had the perfect casting for a character?
Ben Browder is Jack Reacher. I don't know who this Tom Cruise guy thinks he is.

Do you prefer series or one-offs?
Both? It's kind of hard to stay away from series these days - even in non-genre fiction.

Is there a book character you think you are similar too?
Probably, but I'm still on my first cup of coffee and can't think of one at the moment.

Book you've been disappointed with this year?
Most recently I was disappointed by Cop Town by Karin Slaughter. The premise sounded awesome (cops in the 1970's) but the rampant racism and sexism and bigotry and corruption made it feel so much worse than an episode of The Wire.
I kind of blame fandom and their over-reactions of things for decreasing my enjoyment of some entertainment.

Do you read fic, if so do you have a favourite?
I do and have many favorites. Even some that feature my not-so-favorite characters like Carebears on Ice and then other crossovers that seem tailor made for me like Star Wars/Firefly and there's always the AU where the Impala is a spaceship

A book you wish more people would read?
any of these

Recommend a book for future book clubs
A challenge? Like read books that fit letters that spell 'CARDS' (ie. title or author starts with 'c', etc) That would kind of be like a long challenge and I suppose you'd have to link to a quick blurb/review to 'prove' someone read it. *shrugs* Maybe partial points for recommendations, or to-be-read entries? IDK

Ben Browder is Jack Reacher

I have zero interest in anything to do with Tom Cruise... but that right there just may make me want to read this series.

A few years ago there was talk of movie or TV deals with this series and people where throwing Ben Browder's name around (not just fans, people like the author).
And.... that's what made me start reading it in the first place. It's not life changing or anything, but it is an entertaining action series with a reluctant hero.

Well.. I haven't read anything in a long while.. so maybe now is the time to start. :D

I do think an actress I like ended up in the movie, but I just can't sit through Mapother!

Its interesting that Karin went in that direction... You aren't the first person that I've heard hasn't liked it and I feel Karin was trying to do something different and I don't know how well it worked.

There were parts of the story I liked, and I liked Kate and Maggie quite a bit. But it focused more than it needed to on how horrible everyone is

OMG "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" is one of my all time favorite books. I've read it like 7 times. Maya Angelou is my hero!

Fledgling has been on my to read list forever. I absolutely loved "Kindred"

Fledgling was so much better than I expected, I liked Kindred too. It's made me want to check out some of her other stuff.

Oh!! I love book challenges and book bingos like that. I actually might have found 4 or 5 of similar ones on goodreads that I might have accidentally signed up for already

I should really finally read Code Name Verity, I've been meaning to for a while now! Everybody seems to love it.

I really loved that it focused on the friendship between the two women without making the story about some love interest or how some man saved them or how oppressed they were because they were women or any of the other cliche plots stories about women seem to have. It also had the heartbreaking and frightening back drop of WWII and all that comes with.

Code Name Verity books were really good, I was pleasantly surprised considering I went in reading them with negative reviews from some friends.
