What era of music is your favorite? Why?
I have to admit, probably the most recent era - I am a huge fan of hard rock music and symphonic metal and I tend to gravitate towards things that are heavy on electric guitar, bass, and vocals. I also love electronic dance music because of the beat.
What are some of your favorite music artists or bands from the 50s? 60s? 70s? 80s? 90s? and 2000s?
I’m not huge on 50s artists/bands, unfortunately, since I haven’t listened to a lot of them so I don’t have a lot of favorites from then.
As far as the 60s go, I like a few things here and there - the Grateful Dead, the Animals, the Monkees, Jefferson Airplane
From the 70s: I absolutely adore Jimmy Buffett. My dad introduced me to Brown Eyed Girl and Son of a Son of a Sailor and Margaritaville as a kid when he would play it for my mom when we were on vacation since they both loved it. While Eric Clapton also falls into the 60s a bit, but I’ve been a huge fan of the music he made when he was a part of Derek and the Dominos, especially Layla. The guitar work in that song is absolutely incredible and that was one of the things that made me fall in love with guitar music.
The 80s was when both of my favorite musicals premiered - Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables - and while that’s not technically a band or artist, I love that music so much. It’s been a huge part of my life - my dad actually took me to see Phantom when they were touring as a gift when I graduated from high school. I also love John Williams’ soundtrack for the original Star Wars trilogy, which is just a touch more 80s than 70s, I suppose.
When it comes to the 90s, Keb’ Mo’ will always be my number one. His eponymous album is something I would listen to on repeat as a child and I absolutely adored his music. I also absolutely love the Backstreet Boys, though I didn’t get into their music until I got to college. Steven Curtis Chapman’s Speechless album, which was my first CD was also released in ’99 and while I no longer follow his work, that album will always be a favorite.
Chapman’s work in the 2000s was also some of my favorites. My three favorite bands, Breaking Benjamin, Skillet, and Red, also produced of my favorite music then. Red and Skillet were actually how I got into rock music in general. And while they were founded in the 90s, Within Temptation’s albums from the 2000s were how I got into metal. Also, Lifehouse, Switchfoot, and Linkin Park. Can’t leave those out.
From the 2010s, Amaranthe, Andy Black, Avicii, and My Darkest Days have been favorites. I also discovered instrumental trailer music from Two Steps From Hell, audiomachine, The Immediate, Thomas Bergersen, and Future World Music and that is my absolute favorite writing music.
I’m sure I’m missing a few here, but that’s most of it - or at least all I can think of.
How has your taste in music changed in the last year? Five years? Ten?
In the last year or so I’ve found myself reaching for more positive music rather than the angsty rock that I’ve loved for a long time, though I still love it. In the last five years? I’ve gotten into a LOT more rock bands and fewer pop groups (I used to like pop a lot). In the last ten years it has changed massively. I was a bit of a twat as a kid (I blame it on the program we used through high school (A Beka Book) - it was a strong program and I appreciate most of it, but the school that created it was a little absurd in what they believed - which included that rock music was evil. Ironically, my parents never, ever believed that and my dad was a Deadhead) and I definitely think my taste has significantly improved, to say the very least.
Do you think music has changed for better or worse over the years?
I think it’s changed for the better - I may be somewhat biased since I love the way guitar has evolved and more modern music has been my preference (which is actually a huge point of contention with my best friend, go figure). There have been so many incredibly talented musicians that I feel like it’s hard to say that music could be getting worse, even if I don’t like genres like rap and screamo.

We make time each Christmas to go see whatever's playing at the Kennedy Center. Some of them are good, some bad, but I honestly enjoy all of them.

We used to do that with the local venue, though it was mostly the Nutcracker that I remember. Local shows are pretty darn cook. Do you have any particular favorites of the ones you've seen there?
