Title: A Rude Awakening
Pairing: David/Colby
Rating: PG
Length: 757 words
Spoilers: for a bit of conversation from 6.03, 7 Men Out (yes they are...)
Summary: The boys are surprised by a late night phone call.
A/N: Just a fun, little piece celebrating the awesomeness that has been David/Colby so far this season. This is my first Numb3rs fic in a very long time, and my first David/Colby fic. I wrote something similar featuring Larry/Charlie back in the day; I guess I have a thing for this type of situation.
Disclaimer: I'm not yet delusional enough to think they're mine.

Colby wakes up to the shrill sound of his cell phone ringing on the nightstand next to his ear. He groans a little, and he hears David mumble into his pillow as well. Reluctantly he rolls over, removing his arm from around David to answer the phone.
Colby clears his throat in an attempt to answer the phone with some semblance of dignity. “Granger,” he barks, thinking that there had better be a really good reason he was being called at 4 AM. Especially since they had been working overtime to cover for Don’s vacation and he and David both really needed their rest.
“Colby?” he hears through the receiver.
“Nikki?” Colby asks. “Has there been a break in the case?”
“Uh... yeah...” Nikki continues, sounding a little distracted. “One of my LAPD friends just called me to let me know that they picked up one of our perps at a bar fight. I was actually calling to let David know... It’s his call, but you two might want to go pick the guy up and see if we can’t get some info from him that might stop things before they get outta control.”
Colby’s sleep-addled brain starts catching up with what Nikki is telling him, and it is mostly interested in the fact that Nikki said she had called David. Pulling the phone a little ways away from his face, he looks at it and realizes that, yes, he had indeed answered David’s phone. “Yeah... David’s on the couch. I’ll go let him know,” Colby finally replies with the best lie he can come up with at the moment.
“Yeah. You do that,” Nikki answers, and Colby can just hear the smirk on her face. “You know, I was always just jokin’ around with you two. If I had known that you guys were together for real... well, I’m not sure I would’ve really done anything different. But it’s nice to know. I’ll see you at the office,” and with that she hangs up, not letting Colby respond at all.
Colby closes the phone and puts it back down on the nightstand. He turns to look at David, who apparently has decided that going back to sleep is much more appealing than listening to Colby’s conversation. “David,” Colby says as he nudges his sleeping lover.
“Mmghph, wha?” David groggily answers as he rubs his face in an attempt to wake up. Colby thinks that David looks really cute when he’s all sleepy, but he keeps that thought to himself; they have more important things to discuss.
“First of all - well, I’m not actually sure which bit of information is more important. Ok, work related first. Nikki called to say that LAPD picked up one of our perps and -”
“Why did Nikki call you?” David interrupts. “She doesn’t even like you,” David says, nudging Colby at his joke, which they both know is a deflection from his actual insecurity about being recognized as the new primary relief supervisor.
“Well that’s point number two,” Colby continues. “She did call you.”
David looks at him confused for a moment, still waking up.
In order to speed up David’s deduction, Colby prompts David. “Remember the first conversation we had about Twitter? You refused to join and I -“
“Got all insecure about our relationship?” David finishes for him. “Oh,” David continues, realizing where this is going, “and you texted my phone an example tweet - or whatever the hell stupid name it’s called - and you didn’t like the noise my phone made and said ‘wouldn’t it be cute if we had the same ring tone?’”
“I did not say cute,” Colby defends himself.
“So what you’re telling me is that you answered my phone, and judging by the look on your face and what you’ve been saying, you didn’t come up with any clever reason that you might legitimately answer my phone. Man, how were you a triple agent for two years, and you can’t keep Nikki off our case?” David asks.
“Well I think the main variable is you, actually,” Colby answers.
David just rolls his eyes. “Whatever, man, we’ll talk about this later. What did Nikki say? About the case, I mean.”
“That’s pretty much it. LAPD has one of our suspects in custody.”
“Well, come on then,” David says as he rolls out of bed. “What are you waiting for? Let’s go interrogate him.”
“Are you sure you’re done interrogating me?” Colby asks.
“That’s what the car ride over is for,” David answers, smiling.
