Merlin awoke with a jolt. He shook his head briefly to try and clear it. He’d been dreaming about… something… what was it? Damn it. He lay down and closed his eyes, desperately trying to reclaim his sleep and hopefully his dream with it.
Lying there in the dark, he heard it. Breathing. It wasn’t him, he’d forgotten how to breath about thirty seconds ago. Someone was in his room.
Slowly, very slowly, he inched his hand over towards the light. Just as he flicked the switch, a cold, clammy hand grasped his. The last thing he remembered was RED.

The shopping mall was crowded. Merlin hated crowds, too many people pushing and shoving without a care for anyone else.
He had a strange feeling like he was being watched. He shivered and glanced around, wishing Gwen hadn’t disappeared. If someone was watching him, he would not be able to single them out in all these people. There was a cold feeling, and he was quite sure this someone wished him ill.
He tried to put the feeling out of his head, and looked around for Gwen. A reflection in a shop window made him stop. A man. Wearing red.

“Merlin, you’re being silly, I’m sure he didn’t even see you!”
“He was watching me, Gwen!” Merlin clasped the hot teacup in his hands and stared into the milky depths like he thought he could read tea leaves. “I had this weird sort of feeling, like someone wanted to hurt me, and I looked up and there he was. watching.”
“It’s just your imagination.”
“I turned around and he was gone.”
“Like I said, imagination.”
“No, I don’t think so.”
They finished their drinks and carried on with their shopping, but Merlin still couldn’t quite shake the feeling of unease.

Technically, the library was shut, but as a trusted post-grad, the Librarian had allowed Merlin to stay a little longer. He was coming down the stairs when it suddenly went cold again, just like at the mall.
“Hello?” he called out.
He didn’t miss his footing, but suddenly he was tumbling down the stairs.
He hit his head on the the last step, and as he looked back up the stairs, he saw a woman in a black dress coming towards him. Just before he passed out there was a swish of a red cape.
“You shall not have him!”

“Merlin? Wake up, clotpole.”
“Hey…” he mumbled, “…that’s my word.”
A hand was gently brushing his hair off his forehead. He blinked his eyes open and squinted up at the man holding him.
It was the blond from the mall. “Who are you?” He tried to sit up, but his head rebelled.
“You could at least remember your king when he saves your life, Merlin.”
“How long was I unconscious? I thought we still had a queen?”
Suddenly, the man pressed his lips to Merlin’s. A wash of memories that weren’t his own flooded his mind.
“Arthur?”
