Despite the rain, Veronica was sitting outside her favorite cafe. The steady rhythmic sound of the drops hitting the umbrella were soothing, adding to the sense of comfort she felt being right here right now. She curled her hand around her mug of coffee, lifting it towards her mouth, inhaling the scent of espresso. She closed her eyes savoring both the smell and the warmth of the mug on her hands.
She leaned back in her chair and surveyed the scene around her. The streets were nearly empty, devoid of the usual hustle and bustle to and from the market just down the road. The weather had probably forced it to close for the day, and that meant that she wouldn't be able to stop by and pick up the baguettes she was planning on getting.
She watched two young boys run by her, chattering on about something that she couldn't quite catch. Her eyes remained trained on them as the moved towards a scooter parked right in front of her. They curiously inspected the basket at the front of it, gingerly poking through its contents. She couldn't help but laugh at the familiarity of it all.
Her life had turned out completely different than she was expecting. She still couldn't quite believe the place she found herself, both geographically and emotionally. This sleepy little town in France had none of the excitement of New York, or even Neptune, but she couldn't imagine herself anywhere else. The pattern she'd fallen into was both comfortable and fulfilling. She wasn't out chasing the bad guys or even prosecuting them, but she still found her own way to adjust behavior as she saw fit.
She caught movement out of the corner of her eye and turned to see one of the small boys stuff something in his pockets and then look around as if making sure that no one had seen his actions. In a flash Veronica was on her feet moving towards the young boy.
She came to a stop right beside him and the boy looked up at her with wide brown eyes.
Veronica motioned with her head to his pocket, “What you got there Keith?” she asked.
The smaller of the two boys stepped forward, in an attempt to protect his big brother. “Nothing” he said lifting his chin defiantly.
“Oh really, Victor? Cause it seems to me.” She leaned down and with one smooth motion reached into Keith's pocket and scooped out their loot, “You didn't have this when we came this morning.”
“Mooommmm” Keith complained, “that scooter has been there for like weeks. I don't think they'll miss the Optimus Prime.”
“Yeah, they obviously don't know how important he is. We'd give him a much better home.” Victor said nodding sagely.
“Maybe they don't, but its still not ours.” Veronica began, holding up her finger to stop both boys from talking when it looked like they were about to talk over her, “So I think you guys should look out for him. Check on him every morning, make sure he's still there, so that when his owner comes back from him. They know he's been looked after.”
The young boys look at each other and then nodded excitedly, “We'll be like super heroes” Keith said his voice filled with awe.
Veronica nods, ruffling their hair as she stands up, “Exactly, and that is the most important job of all.”
She watched with pride as she made her way back to her table. The boys were huddled together, strategizing about how to best keep the toy safe.
Her life wasn't all she'd expected it to be, it was more.
