CHALLENGE #24: Dearly Departed

Description Write an obituary for a character, either one from an existing fandom or a character you create. You can kill them off now, jump ahead to when they're ninety, or pick someone who's already dead; whatever you like. If you're looking for inspiration, check out the obituaries at The New York Times.

Oh, do they have to stay dead?

Nope. Just as long as they were dead long enough for someone to write an obituary. (I really should have gone with the Daniel Jackson icon for this challenge, shouldn't I?)

LOL! I was thinking the same thing about Daniel - of course same could be said for Buffy and a bunch of other characters I'm sure - great challenge idea :)

Can it be spoken obituaries? Like someone talks about the person at their wake? And if yes, can we make the obituary part of a fic and submit just the obituary and link to the fic? I got two ideas already, and also, thanks for this, it totally made me think of an old idea which I now wrote for the five by five challenge. :D

I'll allow that, sure. And yes, you can definitely embed it in something larger, but only the eulogy/obituary itself will count toward the word count for the challenge. The way you describe it, submitting the eulogy/obituary and linking to the fic, sounds perfect.

I'm glad you were inspired for five by five!

Yay, thanks! Eulogy, that's what it's called, I knew that. :P

How about a character who's a (canonical) ghost doing their own eulogy?

And what about anthropomorphising an inanimate object (an obituary for a car...for instance)

This challenge is giving me some very odd ideas! :)

I think a key part of an obituary or eulogy is that it's delivered by a third party--otherwise it's more of an autobiography--so I'm going to say no to someone delivering their own. Even if they are dead. :)

Yes, a eulogy or obituary for an animate object (or for an animal) is fine.

Oh, we were still a day and a half away from the deadline when you posted that question. Lots of time! (And I see you're already done.)
