[Spoiler (click to open)]The air is heavy with salt and the scent of freshly cut grass when Will slings his backpack onto the passenger seat of his beat-up old truck and checks for the hundredth time that all of his backs are securely tied up in the bed of the truck.

Everything checked and ticked off his mental check list, Will turns around to find his mom hovering on the porch.

"I guess this is it," he says, gripping his keys a little tighter. Davey joked about being homesick, but Will thinks it's anything but a joke. He desperately wants to go, but there are so many things making him want to stay, too. What if he's not good enough? What if he can't hack it? What if his scholarship falls through next year and he has to drop out? What if he gets kicked off the team? What if he hates his teammates? What if he hates college? What if--

His mom wraps her arms around him, squeezing. Will squeezes back, only reluctantly letting go when the time comes. "Be polite. Don't start any fights. Call me at least once every month," she instructs. "If I don't hear from you, I will call your coaches."

"Yes, ma."

"All right. Be good, Will. Love you, kiddo."

"Love you, too," Will mumbles. He gets into his truck and starts her up.

Samwell is waiting.
