Chapter 6
“I’m sorry, can you repeat that?” Sho blinked, putting his hand to his ear, awaiting the strange man’s repeated response.
“Matsumoto Jun is my boyfriend. Are you a friend of his?” Toma’s eyebrows crinkled as he began to scowl.
“No-not really-I mean-well-the thing is-” Sho stuttered, unable to actually explain how he knew Jun.
“Sho-chan-who’s this?” Aiba asked, coming out of Nino’s bedroom at the right time.
“Hello-my name is Ikuta Toma. I’m Matsumoto Jun’s boyfriend-I just mistook this for his apartment. My apologies-I’ll take my leave,” Toma bowed his head, and started down the hallway.
“WAIT!”
Everyone turned and saw Nino, still holding his blanket and still looking a bit out of it.
“I’ll show you the way,” he said, putting the blanket back on his bed and walking towards the door, with Toma close behind.
“I’m Ninomiya Kazunari, by the way,” Nino said as he slipped on his shoes.
Toma bowed his head, “Nice to meet you. I’m-”
“I know exactly who you are. Let’s go,” Nino waved his hand prompting Toma to follow him.
“So you and Jun are neighbors?” the taller man politely asked, smiling at Nino who didn’t care to notice.
“Yeah-but that’s it. I wouldn’t trust that bastard if-well, that’s not important,” he smiled, looking away from Toma, hoping the other hadn’t caught on, “Anyways, here we are-Matsumoto’s apartment.”
“Thank you very much,” Toma bowed his head, then stepped up in order to knock on the door.
Nino just stood back and waited for what he thought would be chaos, unfold. Toma knocked a few more times but there was no answer.
“I guess he’s not-”
“Yes?”
The door swung open and there was Jun standing, in the front hallway of his apartment, half-naked, shocked as ever to see his boyfriend standing in front of him.
“TOMA! What are you doing here?!”
“Hi, Jun, it’s been a while, hasn’t it? I-who is that?”
Nino peeked his head and saw Ohno standing in the living room, looking dazed as he saw so many eyes on him. Jun started to get nervous and Toma started to get angry.
“Um-Satoshi-?” Nino spoke without thinking, and possibly out of habit.
“Do you know him, Ninomiya-san?” Toma asked, not taking his eyes off of Jun.
“Er-you can say that,” Nino laughed awkwardly
“Did you bring him here, Ninomiya? Who told you that you could butt in on my life?” Jun spoke in a condescending tone.
“Hey, don’t go yelling at him just because you’re the one cheating!” Toma defended.
“Oh, you’re taking his side now, aren’t you? I should’ve expected it-don’t tell me you’re sleeping with him!” Jun retorted.
The two started arguing when all of a sudden Ohno stepped in.
“QUIET!”
Everyone looked at him, shocked that such a small man could make such a large noise.
“I’d like it if someone would explain to me what exactly is going on,” he then said in a smaller, softer voice.
Moments later, Toma and Nino found themselves sitting on Jun’s couch, being served tea by Ohno who, for some reason, knew his way around Jun’s kitchen. Jun was sitting in a recliner, his head in his hand and his eyes on Toma. Ohno finally sat down and that is when Jun spoke up.
“Why are you here, Toma? How did you find this apartment?”
Toma sighed, “It’s not like you went into hiding-your landlord, my father, told me where you moved.”
“Whoa, your father was his landlord?” Nino asked without thinking.
“Kazu-” Ohno shook his head, signaling for Nino to not butt in.
“Sorry,” Nino smiled nervously.
“ANYWAYS-I want to know-why did you decide to show up on my doorstep? What makes you think I want to see you again?”
“I want you back, Jun. That’s all I really want,” Toma said, endearingly.
“Well, you should’ve thought of that before you went and slept with that slut, Yamashita.”
“Who’s Yamashita?” Nino, once again, butted in.
Toma, for some reason, wasn’t afraid to answer, “He’s my co-worker. Well, he used to be. I quit that job so I could make you happy, Jun. I haven’t seen Tomohisa-Yamashita-kun since the day I left the company. There’s no worries about the two of us sneaking around-I promise.”
Nino and Ohno stared intently, waiting for Jun’s reply.
“It’s too late.”
“What?”
Jun got up from his seat and walked over to the window. He looked at Toma, slightly bitter that the other man had shown up.
“I’ve moved on-with Ohno-kun, here. I don’t intend on taking you back.”
“I see-well, I guess that’s really all-”
“Wait! Can I say something?”
Everyone turned to Ohno, who had spoken up, unexpectedly, once again.
“What is it?” Jun asked, sounding nicer than he had been to Toma.
“I-I don’t want to come in between you two-I mean, I don’t intend to be your rebound fling, Matsumoto-kun. I’m sorry.”
“EH?!”
“Satoshi.”
“I mean, I don’t want to just get used like that-it’s nothing against you. It’s just-I only slept with you because Kazu, here, broke up with me.”
Nino blushed, feeling guilty for having somewhat caused the rift between Toma and Jun.
“Ohno-kun-what are you saying?”
“I’m saying-I think you should give Ikuta-san another chance. I’d hate to be the reason that you-”
“Is this why you tried to ‘rape’ Sho that time?”
Jun blinked at Nino, unable to believe that the other man would ask such a question.
“WHAT?!” Toma screamed
“Kazu!”
“What the hell?”
Nino acted as if he was unsure of the shock of everyone else in the room.
“I’d say that it was some form of revenge, don’t you think, Matsumoto? Maybe you have an incessant need to make up for what Ikuta did to you. Like, you have to cheat on him with other people’s boyfriends because you have psychological trauma from him cheating on you!”
“What are you, insane?” Jun scoffed.
“You don’t think it’s a plausible argument?” Nino blinked, pouting slightly at the revelation that he might be wrong.
“I’m surprised you even know what ‘plausible’ means,” Jun laughed haughtily.
“Jun!”
“Well, he’s always struck me as an idiot! Besides, what gives you the right to make such an assumption? You’re not my therapist,” the younger man stated.
Nino shook his head.
“No, I’m not but I do have some right since you’re the reason that Satoshi and I broke up!”
“That was not my fault-if anything, it was all you!”
“He was my boyfriend! What gave you the right to butt in on my relationship?!”
“I could ask you the same thing, Ninomiya!”
“SHUT UP!”
Nino and Jun stopped looking at each other and turned their attention to Toma. Ohno blinked curiously as Toma huffed a bit, from irritation.
“Look, I don’t know what’s going on here, exactly but I came here today to get my boyfriend back. You people are just making things worse for me!”
“You people?” Nino growled, rolling up his sleeves like he was aiming to attack Toma, but Ohno stopped him in time, by grabbing him.
“Kazu-maybe we should give them a little privacy. It’s not our place to interfere, anyways.”
Nino struggled from Ohno’s grip, “Don’t you touch me. And I’m not ‘Kazu’ to you.”
The younger man looked at Ohno with malice before walking out of the living room and towards the front door. He opened to leave, but was surprised when Sho and Aiba fell down from behind it.
“What are you two doing?!” he whispered loudly.
Sho helped Aiba up as the two laughed nervously.
“We were just-uh, Masaki?”
Aiba chimed in, “We heard yelling and just made sure everything was okay.”
“Yeah, it looked like you two were very interested in our well-beings,” Nino sarcastically quipped.
Aiba and Sho hung their heads in shame as Nino chuckled and left. Ohno watched as his ex walked out the door, and he started feeling guilty.
“So, you want to tell us what happened?”
Nino was sitting on the couch in the living room of the apartment he shared with Aiba. He had his arms crossed and was deep in the thought. The fact that he wasn’t moving made Sho and Aiba curious as to whether he was still alive.
“Nino-chan?”
Nino didn’t say a word. He just continued thinking.
He wanted to know what had really happened between Toma and Jun. He also wanted to know if it resulted in Jun’s promiscuous behavior. It was true that Jun went for other people’s boyfriends and Nino was convinced that it was some subconscious way of making up for what Toma did to him. Never had Nino become so psychologically involved in another person’s life.
“Nino-chan?!”
“SHUT UP! I’M TRYING TO THINK!”
Aiba pouted, while Sho comforted him.
“Let’s leave him alone for now. Who knows what he will do if we bug him again.”
Aiba nodded and the pair left Nino in his deep state of thought.
A little later on, after Aiba and Sho had left to get dinner on their own, there was a knock on the door. Nino, still sitting on the couch, thinking, got up to check whom it was.
“Yes-oh, it’s you.”
Nino looked disappointed to see Jun standing in front of him.
“What do you want?”
“Well, the least you could do is invite me in,” the younger man sneered.
Nino attempted to shut the door in Jun’s face but Jun’s foot stopped it in time.
“Okay, okay, look, can I just come in?”
Nino stared at Jun, wondering why the other man was sitting on his couch, after all he had done.
“Do you want a drink?” he said, sounding annoyed yet obligated to ask.
“No, I’m fine.”
An awkward silence continued between the two of them.
“So, you wanted to talk to me?”
Jun laughed, sounding very nervous. Nino had never seen his hated-neighbor look so uncomfortable; it was quite satisfying to say the least.
“Yeah, about that. I wanted to talk to you about what happened today.”
“You mean, when your boyfriend caught you cheating on him with my boyfriend?” Nino smiled.
Jun’s head hung forward. Nino wanted to laugh but held it in, since Jun was obviously embarrassed.
“Yeah-that. Anyways, the thing is-Toma and I broke up a while ago. Well, not a while. More like a month ago-well, I guess it was longer ago, but it wasn’t official until about a month ago. I didn’t speak to him for a couple of weeks before I made it clear that we were over. And then I moved here but that was only a week or so after he and I were done for good.”
“Is there a point to this?”
Jun laughed again, a habit he had when he was truly nervous.
“Yes-I’m telling you this because-I thought you might be curious and to be honest-there’s no one else I can go to.”
Nino felt a bit of shock overcome him.
“No one-what about S-Satoshi?” Nino squeaked, feeling awkward about mentioning Ohno.
“He left quite a while ago. I think he and I are done-or at least he’s done with me. He was very adamant on Toma and I getting back together.”
“Is that so?”
Jun smiled.
“I think you have a chance again-Ninomiya-kun.”
Nino sighed, a bit dejected.
“I’d rather not discuss that-if you don’t mind.”
“Oh of course. As I was saying-Toma and I had been dating for three years when he started working for this big trading company. It was his dream job and I couldn’t be more supportive of him-that is, until I found out he was canceling our plans to hang out with his co-worker; a guy named Yamashita Tomohisa.”
Nino perked up a little, reveling in the juicy details that Jun was revealing to him.
“Yamashita seemed nice enough. We’d been introduced only once at a party that Toma’s company was holding. I didn’t suspect a thing-until I went to visit Toma on my day off and found him and Yamashita making out in Toma’s office!”
Nino’s mouth dropped, but he quickly closed it so as to not seem too enthralled.
“He acted as if it wasn’t a big deal and just told me ‘It just happened’. Like that was a great excuse. I would’ve killed him if I wasn’t afraid of going to jail,” Jun put his head in his hands, looking like he felt remorseful for not murdering Toma.
Nino gripped the arms of his chair in anticipation for the incomplete story Jun was telling him.
“I was so hurt by that. We’d been together for three whole years and I was sure it wouldn’t be long before he would ask me to move in with him! Then he got that damn job and ended up breaking my heart. I moved out of my previous apartment and found this place. It was perfect-I’d no longer be near Toma, or my landlord, who happens to be his dad.”
“Yeah, he said that,” Nino chuckled until Jun gave him a look, “Sorry.”
“As I was saying, I moved here. I mean, before that I had my share of flings-letting them occur near my landlord’s apartment so that word would travel from Toma’s father directly to him.”
“You had sex outside your landlord’s apartment?!”
“NO, YOU IDIOT! I meant that I’d happen to pass by the apartment while I was with my date. My landlord would always see me and I know he’d tell Toma because every morning after a one-night stand, Toma would call me, demanding to know where I was the night before. Haha It was the perfect crime!”
“Not really-you do know that ‘revenge is best served cold’, right?”
Jun glared at Nino.
“I wasn’t asking your opinion, I was telling you my story.”
Nino rolled his eyes and sighed, allowing for Jun to continue.
“As I was saying-Toma didn’t seem to be remorseful about cheating, early on, but once I started getting back at him, he was desperate to get me back. But then one day, I decided, enough was enough, and so I decided to move.”
“What made you change your mind?”
Jun didn’t say anything. He looked deep in thought, much like Nino had been earlier. It seemed he was trying to remember why exactly but he couldn’t come up with the reason.
“I’m not exactly sure. I just remember something inside of me, telling me that I had to move on with my life, if I ever really wanted to be free from Toma.”
Nino nodded his head, as if he was agreeing with Jun’s inner voice.
“I moved and thought I’d be free but when I met you-you and Ohno-kun and Aiba-kun and Sakurai-kun, it wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be.”
Nino shook his head.
“I’m sorry, what?”
“You-when I met you, there was something about you that-I don’t know, it just ticked me off-a lot.”
Nino blinked, a couple hundred times in a matter of seconds.
“You’re saying I ticked you off when I first met you?” he asked, sounding annoyed at Jun.
Jun smiled, “Yes, there was something about you that reminded me-of Toma.”
Nino seemed floored by the revelation revealed to him.
“I don’t know exactly what it was-you two look nothing alike. Toma’s tall and slim and you’re short and-well-haha.”
“EXCUSE ME?!”
“Nothing-I just felt something about your-aura-that reminded me of Toma. In one way, it made you completely irritating to me-but at the same time-I found you ridiculously attractive.”
Nino’s face turned completely pale and his mouth hung open. He stiffened up and could have easily been mistaken for a statue.
“I don’t think I’ll ever be able to figure it out-but I was a little turned on every time you and I would fight. It’s really hard for me to explain,” Jun smiled, unconsciously getting up and moving closer to where Nino was.
Nino started moving and looked as Jun bent over towards him, and smirked widely.
“You can’t fight it, Ninomiya-san-I could feel that you like me a lot, too.”
“What?!”
“Admit it-you think I’m good-looking, don’t you?”
“I-I-I-I”
Just then, Aiba unlocked the front door and opened it.
“Come right on in. I’ll just let Nino-chan know you’re-here.”
Aiba, Sho, and Toma, who had been invited in by Aiba, stood at the entrance to the living room and looked at the scene unfolding in front of them.
“JUN!”
“TOMA!”
“NINO-CHAN!”
“NINOMIYA-KUN!”
“Oh gawd.”
