Chapter 5

“Nino-chan?”

Nino sat on his bed, clutching his pillow and staring at the mirror in front of him. His eyes were red and his cheeks were slightly pale. His hair was mussed and he looked like he had been in a fight. This was not what he expected for a day like today.

“Nino-chan?”

“What?!”

Aiba tried unlocking the door but found it too difficult. He then remembered the credit card trick Nino had taught him and slowly opened his roommate’s bedroom door, using his credit card to undo the lock. He walked in with a slight sense of caution, preparing himself in case Nino attacked him with the pillow he was holding. He sat down on the edge of Nino’s bed, sliding over close when he felt it was safe to do so.

“Nino-chan, are you okay?”

Aiba expected Nino to kill him for asking a stupid question but he ended up giving a different reaction. Nino laid his head on Aiba’s shoulder and just started to cry, whimpering a few times. Aiba was caught off guard but a few moments later, he slowly put his arms around his friend’s shoulder and consoled him while the younger man continued to cry.

“What?”

“Do you want to com to my apartment-Ohno-kun?” Jun repeated himself.

Ohno was on the floor, still staring up at the younger man hovering over him. He wasn’t quite sure what to say; he had basically just been dumped by Nino not too long before and it would be somewhat disrespectful for him to wind up in Jun’s apartment. On the other hand, he was on the rebound and a pair of open arms looked pretty good to him, at that moment.

Ohno wiped his eyes and smiled weakly.

“Sure.”

Jun smiled back and helped Ohno off the ground and led him away, back to his apartment.

After a few minutes of silence that was occasionally interrupted by Nino’s whimpering, Aiba and Nino sat on the bed, hands folded in their open laps. They both had a lot to think about; this didn’t just seem like a normal situation involving regular cheating by their boyfriends. This was something much more complex, involving one man and only one man.

“Matsumoto,” Nino growled.

“What?”

“I’m going to kill that damn bastard for laying his hands on my boyfriend!” Nino got up and charged for the door, but Aiba stopped him.

“Nino-chan, don’t! You shouldn’t blame Matsumoto-san for all of this. It’ll do you no good,” he said, holding Nino back as best he could.

Nino ignored him and continued to struggle, attempting to grasp the sides of the doorframe and push his way into the living room, down the front hall, and out of the apartment in order to attack the supposed wrecker of his relationship.

“LET GO OF ME! I’M GOING TO KILL HIM FOR WHAT HE’S DONE!”

Aiba, on a surge of unexplained strength, took Nino and threw him onto the bed, only to walk over and crawl on top of him and hold down his arms. The position they were in was slightly embarrassing for the younger man, but Aiba didn’t care because it got Nino to stop trying to kill Jun.

“Will you listen to me already?!” Aiba scolded, in a tone Nino had very rarely heard from him.

In fact, Nino could not remember the last time Aiba had been this mad, at least at him. It was even worse for Nino, knowing that the taller man’s crotch was dangerously close to his own and the two were only within inches of each other’s face.

“Okay! But will you just do one thing?”

“What?”

“GET THE HELL OFF OF ME, YOU PERVERT!”

Aiba looked around and realized what he had done. He quickly got up, wiped his hands off on his pants, and shuddered.

“S-Sorry, Nino-chan. I don’t know what I was thinking.”

“You’re telling me! It looked like you were about to rape me!”

“What?! I’d never rape you, Nino-chan-you’re not my type anyways.”

“What?!”

“Yeah, you’re-DON’T GO CHANGING THE SUBJECT! I told you I needed to talk to you and you keep struggling with me! This is important! I need to tell you what really went on between Ohno-kun and-Matsumoto-san.”

Nino crossed his arms and looked away, disgruntled, “That’s not necessary. I already can tell you what happened.”

“Oh really? Then what happened between them?” Aiba put his hands on his hips, and was practically yelling at Nino. He did not seem like his usual self, at least not at that moment.

“Well-you see-those two-they-I-um-they,” Nino rambled, unable to explain what he thought he knew.

“What did you say?”

Nino got mad.

“Why should I explain it to you?! We both know what happened! There’s no need for an explanation.”

“They didn’t sleep together!”

Nino looked at Aiba, almost shocked that he had been wrong.

“What?”

Aiba shook his head, running his fingers through his hair before settling them on either side of his waist.

“They never slept together. What you think happened never actually happened. All they did was have coffee with another and nothing more and it wasn’t even planned.”

“What do you mean ‘it wasn’t planned’?”

“I mean, they just bumped into each other and started talking. It was as simple as that,” Aiba said, hoping that Nino would believe him and then forgive Ohno. He wanted things to go back to normal, before Jun had entered the picture.

“How do I know you’re not lying to me?”

“What?”

“How do I know you’re not just saying that in order to get me to forgive Satoshi? What makes you think I’d just fall for something as paper-thin as that? I’m not an idiot, Aiba!”

Aiba slapped Nino clear across the face. Clearly, it was the first time he had ever raised his hand against Nino like this, because Nino’s eyes started to water ever so slightly.

“You don’t want to believe me? You really think I’d lie to you at a time like this?! I’m just reporting to you what Matsumoto told me! I would not lie to you-it’d do no one any good.”

Nino rubbed his cheek and looked at Aiba through his watery eyes. He then looked at the mirror, noticing a picture of him and Ohno in the corner. His heart ached, more than his cheek did.

“I’ve got to find him.”

“What? Who?”

“Satoshi! Oh-chan! I can’t just let him go! I’d never forgive myself as long as I lived!”

“Nino-chan!”

Nino ignored Aiba and ran out of his bedroom. He slipped on his shoes and opened the door, hoping that Ohno was still there. Much to his disappointment, the older man was not. He then jogged down the hall, stopping when he saw something suspicious on the floor. It was a handkerchief with the initials “O.S.” stitched in the corner.

Unexpectedly, the handkerchief had been by Jun’s door, which made Nino’s heart sink. But before he could completely give in to his assumptions, Nino pounded on Jun’s door.

“MATSUMOTO! MATSUMOTO! OPEN UP!”

He continued to bang on the door a few more minutes before he got an answer. The door finally opened and there was Jun, shirtless with his fly unzipped and his hair mussed. He looked at Nino with a somewhat sadistic expression on his face, one that made Nino’s stomach churn.

“To what do I owe this pleasure-Ninomiya-san?”

“Where is he?!”

“He who?” Jun blinked, feigning confusion.

“You know damn well who I’m referring to! Where is he? Where is my boyfriend?!”

Jun smirked before turning his head and calling towards someone in his living room.

“Oh, Ohno-kun-you have a visitor!” he chirped in a singsong voice.

Nino’s eyes widened when he saw Ohno, wearing nothing but his boxers walking out, looking guilty and very ashamed. He attempted to cover himself but it was of no use since it was pretty obvious what he was up to.

“Kazunari-” he barely whispered.

“Satoshi-I-I”

Nino’s voice cracked and his breathing became labored. His heart beat quickly and his stomach was in knots. He didn’t know what to do or say at that moment, his mind too scrambled to give him one answer. So he did the only thing that stuck out to him: he ran away. He ran down the hallway and burst into his apartment.

“Kazu!” Ohno called out, attempting to go after him but Jun put his arm in front of the shorter man, stopping him from doing so.

“Let him go-he’s made his decision,” Jun stated seriously, but the serious expression melted into a smile, “Now, where were we?”

Meanwhile, Nino was sitting on the floor in front of his apartment door, clutching his legs and crying uncontrollably. Aiba came running out, shocked to see his roommate in such a state.

“Nino-chan!”

Aiba dove to the floor, leaning against the wall next to Nino, staring at the other one, concerned. Nino replied with serious bawling that echoed throughout the apartment. He wouldn’t stop crying for several hours before he eventually fell asleep and stayed asleep until late the next day.

“Nino-chan-do you want to eat some breakfast-” Aiba turned and looked at the clock to see what time it was, “Or rather, some lunch?”

Nino didn’t say anything; instead, he just stared blankly at the wall, his head on his pillow and his arm hanging over the side of the bed. He had the blankets covering only half of his body, with his leg sticking out from underneath. His eyes looked glazed over and bloodshot, most likely from having cried so much for so long. He felt numb at that moment, as if nothing new could make him feel any better or any worse, for that matter.

He had lost the one thing he truly loved most in the world to someone without compassion or decency. Nino felt defeated and alone, despite the fact that Aiba was with him at the moment. Sho was as well, but kept his distance by sitting in the living room, eagerly waiting for an update from Aiba.

“Nino-chan?”

Nino blinked; the sound ringing in his ears.

“I’m not hungry,” was all he could manage to say.

“You have to eat something-you haven’t eaten in over 24 hours. I’m afraid you’ll get sick or something-”

“What does it matter if I am? There’s no one who would care either way! I’m alone in this world-now that that bastard stole my Oh-chan,” he griped, sounding on the verge of tears. He sat up, the blanket still covering the lower half of his body.

He looked at Aiba with sorrowful eyes before wiping them as tears started to fall.

“I just can’t believe this could-”

Aiba got up all of a sudden, interrupting Nino’s lamenting.

“Eh? What’s wrong?”

Aiba looked around, “I thought I heard the doorbell ring.”

Sure enough, it did ring and Sho was the one to answer it.

“Hello?” he replied to the person on the other side.

“Hi, my name is Ikuta Toma. Is this Matsumoto Jun’s apartment?”

Sho looked at the other man, confused but shook his head in response.

“Matsumoto-san lives down the hall, just a few doors down,” Sho pointed the way.

“Ah, thank you. Sorry to have disturbed you,” the man smiled.

“Wait,” Sho stopped him.

“Yes?”

“Can I ask-how do you know Matsumoto-san?”

The man’s smile weakened a bit, “I’m his boyfriend.”
