Chapter 4
“Eh? Are you sure it’s him?” Sho asked Aiba who he was on the phone with.
“I’m positive. It looks like him and he’s got that same stupid jacket that Ohno-kun ALWAYS wears,” Aiba responded, shifting his head around to get a better view of the pair in the coffee shop.
Aiba could feel his heart beating in his chest; it was quick and painful and he felt like it would burst. The weird thing was, it was like seeing his own boyfriend with someone else and not the boyfriend of his best friend. This was what people called empathy, Aiba thought to himself as he glared at the smile on Ohno’s face.
“Hold on-where are you, Masaki?”
“I’m at the coffee shop on 3rd and Main-why?”
“I’ll be there in 5 minutes; I’m only a couple blocks away. I went grocery shopping.”
“Really?” Aiba chirped, directing his attention away from what was really going on, “I was too!”
“You were? We should’ve gone together,” Sho pouted.
“Yeah, we should’ve and-WAIT! Sho-chan, just come here as quick as you can. We need to figure out a plan.”
Back at the apartment, Nino was patiently waiting for Aiba to come home so he could have some chicken noodle soup. He waited for about 5 minutes before groaning and fidgeting in his bed.
“Ah, where’s Aiba? I’m hungry!”
He then looked at his phone and decided he would call Ohno in order to pass the time. It was also a good idea because he knew he had to apologize to his boyfriend for being so cold to him. He dialed the phone number but before he pressed the “Send” button, he stopped to think.
Why had Ohno asked about what Nino would do in the case of infidelity? Was it really imperative to know in case such a thing occurred? Nino couldn’t understand why Ohno would ask that without something being wrong in the first place. Regardless, he pressed, “Send” and waited for Ohno to pick up his phone.
“Hello?”
“Oh-chan? It’s me-I wanted to talk to you-about last night. Are you busy?”
“No-hold on one second.”
Nino waited a few minutes before hearing Ohno speak again.
“Sorry, I had to go outside. What did you want to talk about?”
“Outside? Where are you?”
“I’m having coffee with-with someone from work. We ran into each other and just started talking. Anyways, what did you want to talk about?”
“Oh I see. I just wanted to know if things were okay with us. I know it got a little awkward towards the end-I wanted to apologize.”
Ohno chuckled, “It’s not your fault, Kazu. I shouldn’t have asked such a question without expecting a harsh answer. Well, not harsh, I mean-”
“No, I understand. It’s just that-that’s just what I believe. If someone really loves you, then they won’t dare to stray-no matter what temptation may come up.”
“Look, I don’t want to get into this right now-I don’t want to leave Ma-my co-worker for too long. We can talk later. Goodbye.”
Before Nino got a chance to respond, Ohno had hung up and went back to join Jun again. Nino felt guilty and he was on the verge of tears but took a deep breath. He walked back to bed and lay down, still waiting for Aiba.
“I can’t believe him!” Aiba whispered to Sho who had apparently arrived at that moment.
“Why? What’d he say?”
“You didn’t hear him? He lied to Nino-chan about being with a co-worker-that-I could just-gah!” Aiba made a gesture as if he was choking something.
Sho chuckled nervously, “I don’t blame him. Telling Nino that he’s with Matsumoto-san would be a bad idea.”
“But he’s still lying to him, Sho!”
“I know-I know. Look, I’m sure Ohno-kun has a good reason for having coffee with Matsumoto-maybe he’s telling the truth about just running into each other.”
Aiba looked deep in thought; he turned his head and continued to watch as Jun and Ohno got up from their table and said their goodbyes.
“Oh crap, they’re coming this way. Hurry-get up-don’t let them see you!” Aiba pushed Sho in a nearby alley, out of sight from the sidewalk and from Ohno and Jun who separated at that moment.
“Who should we follow? The liar or the slut?”
“Masaki,” Sho sounded shocked that Aiba was saying such things.
“What? We have to get the truth before we tell Nino-chan,” he replied, looking at Sho like the older man was an idiot for thinking that they would stop their spying.
“We could follow Matsumoto since Ohno-kun will probably end up going back to your apartment. Just an idea-”
“You’re right!” Aiba shouted.
Sho jumped, “I am?”
“Yes-if we follow Matsumoto then we’ll see what the devil incarnate does in his free time and only then will we be able to find out what he’s doing with Ohno-kun.”
“’Devil incarnate’?” Sho chuckled softly.
“We’ll go follow him and see what he’s doing and-wait! He’s leaving! Follow him, Sho-chan!” Aiba pushed Sho back out of the alleyway and the two headed down the sidewalk after Jun.
Ohno was making his way up the street when he got a call on his cell phone. It was Nino again and Ohno was a little annoyed at the moment but chose to suck it up and answer cheerfully.
“Kazu-hi. What’s up?”
“Are you still in your meeting right now?”
“It’s not exactly a meeting-but no, I’m not. I’m actually heading back home right now.”
“Oh.”
“Why? What’s wrong?”
“I was just wondering if you wanted to come over-hang out for a little bit-if you catch my drift,” Nino purred into the receiver. Despite the fact that he was supposed to be sick and despite the fact that Aiba would be returning at any moment, Nino was determined to get Ohno alone.
“I-I don’t think so, Kazu. I’m a little tired today so I think I’m just going to shower and take a nap. I’ll call you later though. See you.”
Nino sighed, sounding very disappointed, “Okay. I’ll talk to you late-”
Ohno hung up again before Nino finished talking and that just made the younger man extremely annoyed.
“What the-grr!”
He fell back on his bed and just held the phone in his hand, continuing waiting for Aiba to return home so he could be nurtured while his boyfriend left him alone.
Aiba and Sho were doing their best detective work as they followed Jun up and down the streets of the city. He first made a stop at a bookstore where he read a couple of magazines. Aiba and Sho concealed their faces with comic books and stood fairly near the man they were following. Once Jun left, they followed him out.
Jun walked down the street and stopped to look at some cakes in a bakery. Aiba screeched to a halt and grabbed Sho’s arm and hid around the corner, keeping their eyes on their target so as to catch his next move. Jun went inside and Aiba immediately let go of Sho and stalked the younger man.
“Masaki! What the heck are you doing?! He’ll see you in the window!” Sho whispered loudly.
Aiba pressed his face against the window so he could see through it and looked as Jun stared at the cakes on display. Then the younger man turned his head and Aiba turned around quickly so his back was pressed against the glass. Jun shook his head but continued to look at the cakes, acting as if he must’ve been seeing things.
“MASAKI!” Sho screamed loudly, as he grabbed Aiba and pulled him away. One could tell that Jun had heard the commotion and was curious as to what was going on, so he went out of the bakery and looked around the storefront.
“Fuck,” Sho grunted and dragged Aiba away, as he ran down the alleyway and hid in a doorway until Jun left. Jun looked around and found nothing; he shrugged his shoulders and continued on his way.
“Masaki-one thing you have to know about stalking someone-DON’T GET CAUGHT DOING IT!”
“Okay! Okay! Now shh!” Aiba grunted as he led Sho back down the alley and back out onto the sidewalk, “We have to keep following him so we can know what he’s up-to-Matsumoto-san? W-What are you doing here?”
Apparently, Jun had been hiding around the corner and was waiting for Sho and Aiba to catch up with him. Sho whistled and looked away as if he was not involved with either man; he scratched his head and pretended to be window-shopping. Aiba gulped and started shaking nervously as he looked at Jun, whose arms were crossed and his foot was starting to tap.
“Dammit! Aiba, where the hell are you?!” Nino shouted to himself. It apparently didn’t occur to him to call his roommate to make sure that the other was all right. He eventually thought of this and started dialing Aiba’s cell phone number.
“Come on, Aiba, pick up-pick up-pick-AIBA!”
Aiba panted into the phone, barely able to speak, “N-Nino-chan-I can’t talk right now. I’m-I’m in a bit of trouble at the moment.”
“What?! What’s going on? Where are you?! Tell me-I’ll come help-”
“Masaki, hang up before Nino-kun-” Sho was crying out in the background.
“Eh? Is that Sho? What are you guys doing? Oh gawd-you’re not-‘doing it’, are you?”
Aiba continued panting, “I’m sorry, Nino-chan-I have to go now.”
For the third time, Nino was hung up on and he was none too happy about it.
“Son-of-a-what the hell is going on with everybody?! I’m gonna-oh hell, I’m going to find out what’s going on,” he said to himself, heading towards his closet and putting on his pants. He got dressed and grabbed his keys, and headed out to find either Aiba and Sho or the unexplainably reclusive Ohno.
Nino’s first stop was at the grocery store where Aiba was supposed to be but had made his way from about an hour ago. Since there was no sight of the taller, more absent-minded man, Nino continued on his search. He walked to the coffee shop where Jun and Ohno had been earlier and still no sign of his best friend and his boyfriend.
He continued walking when he saw a head of shaggy blond hair sitting next to a head of straight dark-brown hair at the café down the block from where he was. Nino grunted to himself and shook his head, making his way closer to the table when he stopped to notice that the two people he was looking for were sitting with.
It was Aiba and Sho with none other than Jun.
“What the-” Nino whispered to himself. He got even angrier and rolled up his sleeves as he stormed over to the table. He was shocked to hear laughter as he got closer.
“WHAT IN THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE?!” he started ranting.
“Ah, Ninomiya-kun, what an unpleasant surprise,” Jun remarked sadistically.
“Nino-chan! What are you doing here?!” Aiba asked, sounding guilty.
Sho coughed a lot, grabbing the water in front of him in order to clear his throat.
“I want to know what the hell you two are doing with this jackass ESPECIALLY after what happened just the other day!”
Jun laughed as he took a sip from his glass. He placed the glass down and looked up at Nino, smiling the entire time.
“It’s quite simple, Ninomiya-kun-your friends here were spying on me. Apparently-they saw me and Ohno-kun having coffee together.”
Nino’s heart dropped; he couldn’t believe his ears. Ohno had actually been having coffee with Jun! Immediately, Nino assumed that Jun was the ‘co-worker’ that Ohno had been chatting with and was too busy with to talk to Nino. A mix of emotions plagued Nino but the most pressing one being an undying rage that quickly overtook the usually reserved man.
“YOU STUPID SON-OF-A-” Nino growled as he lunged across the table at Jun, grabbing the other man from his jacket and falling forward.
“Nino-chan!” Aiba screamed, also lunging forward but instead trying to keep Nino from harming Jun. All three went down at once, the table crashing down underneath them. Jun fell to the ground as Nino fell on top of him and Aiba fell on top of Nino. The tablecloth was the only thing that separated Jun and Nino but it obviously was not much of a barrier to keep Nino from attacking his prey.
“I’m going to kill you!” Nino cried, his eyes filling with tears and his voice quivering.
Jun struggled underneath him, “Get the hell off of me, Ninomiya! Before I have them call the police on your ass!”
“Both of you, stop!” Aiba also cried, as he struggled to get up and pull Nino up off of Jun. He finally got up, with Sho’s help and pulled Nino with him. Nino fell to the ground with Aiba’s arms underneath his arms and his legs were kicking in Jun’s general direction. Jun scooted away from Nino, touching his lip and looking shocked to see trickles of blood go down his fingers.
“You fucking psychopath! You gave me a bloody lip! You need to control your anger issues, you maniac,” Jun complained as he got himself up off the ground. Everyone around them stood shocked as the waiters and the manager of the café came out.
“What on earth is going on out here?” the short middle-aged man who ran the café asked.
“This guy came out of nowhere and just attacked me!” Jun griped as he continued to wipe his lip with a handkerchief from his jacket pocket.
Nino glared at him without saying anything and had Aiba speak for him.
“I’m so, so, so sorry. This is all a huge misunderstanding-we’ll leave right now.”
“Wait a second,” the manager stopped them from leaving, “Sir, would you like for me to send the police?” he asked Jun.
Jun didn’t answer right away and merely looked at Nino, who wasn’t looking at him in anger but rather in fear. Jun smirked as he put his handkerchief away; he turned to the manager and said, “I’m deeply sorry for this. I’ll pay for the damages. Please do not involve the police-it is all just a misunderstanding. I apologize.”
He bowed his head respectively and took out his checkbook; as he filled out a check, he continued to look at Nino who was more confused than ever. Jun chuckled softly. He ripped the check from the book and handed it to the manager who looked almost stunned at the amount.
Jun put on his sunglasses and stuck his hands in his jacket pocket; he stopped at Nino, who still had Aiba’s hands under his arms.
Jun simply whispered, “If I were you, I would keep a better eye on my boyfriend. You seem to have some trust issues, am I right?”
Nino grunted a bit but refrained from attacking Jun once again. He let the other man just walk away with a sadistic smile on his face and a slightly bloody lip. Aiba finally let go and Nino stood staring at Jun’s back with his fists clenched and his mouth in the form of an angry frown.
“I’ll kill you, Matsumoto, if it’s the last thing I manage to do on this earth,” he said under his breath.
After coming back to the apartment, Nino put a towel to his forehead and lay back on the couch with his arm across his face. He was exhausted from fighting with Jun and was in no mood to hear anyone talk to him.
“Nino-chan?”
Nino just grunted and shifted a bit in his position.
“Nino-chan?”
“WHAT?!” he screamed as he looked at a scared Aiba standing over him.
“D-Don’t you want to talk about what happened?”
Nino put his arm back over his face and lied back on the couch, “No. I don’t want to talk about it now or EVER!”
“But don’t you want to know what really happened between Ohno-kun and Matsumoto?”
“I don’t need to hear what happened because I already know what happened.”
“You think you know but you really-”
“You know what, Aiba? Maybe you should worry more about your cheater of a boyfriend than my cheater of boyfriend,” Nino smiled falsely as he got up from the couch and stomped over to his room, slamming the door behind him. As soon as he did, he slid down to the floor, clutching his legs and crying into them softly.
“Ohno-kun, what are you doing here?” Nino could hear Aiba say. He put his ear next to the door and tried to listen to the conversation occurring in his living room.
“I just thought I should check up on Kazu-he sounded a bit worried on the phone today,” Ohno explained as he took his coat off and walked into the living room. He turned towards Aiba and asked, “Where is he anyways?”
Aiba shushed Ohno and pointed towards Nino’s bedroom door, “He’s in his room, moping. He found out you and Matsumoto-san were having coffee and he just-”
“Oh no.”
Aiba looked at Ohno who turned the palest shade of white.
“Ohno-kun?”
“Oh-Oh-Oh no-he-oh gawd-what must he think? After yesterday-he-aw man-aw-oh gawd-I have to talk to him.”
Aiba stopped Ohno who was shaking and stuttering and mumbling, “Nino-chan is in a state of shock and disbelief and he just might kill you if you go through that door.”
Aiba clearly was not the cheerful, optimistic person he always at that moment. He knew what really went down between Ohno and Jun and yet he still felt some anger at Ohno because of the way the news of their encounter had affected his best friend.
“But I need to talk to him and let him know what really happened!”
“I’m telling you, Ohno-kun, this will not go well. I don’t think Nino-chan will even give you a chance to-”
“What the hell are you doing here?” a voice said in a soft but harsh manner.
“Kazu-”
Nino was standing in the doorway of his bedroom with his arms crossed and his body leaning against the frame. He looked at Ohno with the sternest eyes and the fiercest look that the older man had ever seen on his boyfriend.
“I don’t want to see you right now, Satoshi,” Nino was adamant on using Ohno’s real name instead of his cute nickname.
“But I have to explain to you what happened with me and Matsumoto-san.”
“You don’t need to explain a thing-I already know what happened and I don’t want to see you anymore!”
“What?!”
“That’s right-you can leave now. I don’t want to talk to you,” Nino growled before slamming the bedroom door in Ohno’s face.
“Kazu-Kazunari! Open up!” Ohno slammed his fist against the door repeatedly in order to get Nino to open it but the younger man wouldn’t open up.
“Maybe it’s better if you go, Ohno-kun,” Aiba said with a concerned look on his face, he seemed almost sympathetic towards the other man, “I think if you let Nino-chan calm down a bit, he’ll be ready to talk to you. I’ll help by explaining to him what actually happened.”
“You’d do that for me, Aiba-kun?” Ohno smiled faintly.
“I’m not doing it for you-I’m doing it for Nino-chan. I know how much he loves you and I couldn’t stand to see you two break up because of a misunderstanding like this.”
“Break up? You think he’d break up with me because of this?” Ohno cried.
Aiba looked away as if he couldn’t bear to break the news to the other man; all he managed to do was whisper his apologies to Ohno as he led the other man out of the apartment.
Ohno stood in front of the closed door and put his hand against it as he slid down to the floor, crying uncontrollably. As he sat there, Jun came up the hallway looking very confused as to why Ohno was bawling.
“Ohno-kun?”
Ohno sniffled and looked up at Jun, the other man smiled at him warmly.
“Do you want to come to my apartment?”
