Chapter 2

After their breakfast, Nino and Ohno made their way to the nearby grocery store for the super sale that Nino had been anxious to attend. However, with the incident involving meeting a new neighbor, he was more agitated than excited at that point.

Ohno didn’t seem to notice and just kept walking until he saw a crowd of people standing outside of a small storefront, yelling and pushing and awaiting for the front door to open.

“Oi, Kazu-I think we’re late,” he said, pointing and moving like a little kid with a bladder problem.

“Eh? Oh-yeah-let’s go,” Nino mumbled in response, not really paying attention to what was going on at the moment.

But Ohno got his attention when he grabbed his hand and pulled him towards the crowd, and attempted to push his way through the herd of crazed shoppers looking for a bargain.

“Come on, Kazu! It’s war!” Ohno said, looking like the hero of an old military movie.

Nino smiled at his surprisingly enthusiastic boyfriend and enveloped the fighting spirit by making his way to the front of the crowd and stood there, eagerly awaiting the storekeeper to open the store.

“I’m really glad you came with me,” he smiled at Ohno.

Ohno smiled back and just said, “Of course! I’d do anything for you!”

Nino’s heart jumped and he could feel any bad feelings quickly dissipate at that moment. He grabbed Ohno and hugged him tight, despite the confined space they were in. Eventually, the crowd got too much and they split up, but not before the shopkeeper finally opened the doors and everyone ran inside. Nino felt a surge of energy overtake his body and he did his best to grab as much low-priced food as he could. Of course, Ohno being there helped his energy boost and he felt like he could conquer the world. More specifically, he felt like he could handle anything the new neighbor dished out to him.

“I’m not going down without a fight,” he thought to himself, before grabbing a carton of eggs from an old lady’s hands, which in turn got him hit a couple of times by the lady’s purse.

Back at the apartment, Aiba and Sho were watching TV together. Aiba seemed oblivious to the stare that Sho was giving him and the touch of the older man’s hand on his shoulder didn’t seem to get his attention either.

“Masaki,” Sho whispered in a breathy and sensuous manner.

“Hmm?” Aiba replied, still oblivious and completely focused on the television set.

Sho opened his mouth but then just mumbled, “Nothing.”

Aiba smiled and got up really quickly.

“Come here, I want to show you something. It’s in my room,” he smirked, taking Sho’s hand and leading him out of the living room.

Sho felt a sharp pain in his stomach; he got this pain whenever he was extremely nervous. He chose to bear with it and followed Aiba to his bedroom.

“Look,” Aiba pointed in a particular direction and Sho turned, excited to see what it was. However, his shoulders slumped and the pain quickly went away when he realized Aiba was pointing to a new stuffed animal he had gotten.

“Oh-a new stuffed animal-cool,” Sho faked enthusiasm, not very well.

Aiba just giggled and went over to the bed, sitting down and patting the spot next to him. Sho’s disappointment turned into eagerness as he sat down next to Aiba and looked the other man dead in the eyes. Aiba put his hand on Sho’s cheek and slowly leant into give the other man a kiss but he was interrupted when a loud knocking came from the front door.

Aiba turned his head away and listened.

“Dammit,” Sho muttered to himself.

“I wonder who that is,” Aiba said in a confused manner, taking his hand away from Sho’s face. The older man sighed with frustration and followed Aiba as he went to answer the door.

Aiba opened the door and jumped in response, “M-Matsumoto-san!”

Sure enough, there was Jun, the new neighbor, standing in the hallway, smiling and looking as dazzling as he had when he first arrived.

“Hello, Aiba-san, Sakurai-san. Is Ninomiya-san here? There’s something I want to talk to him about,” Jun smiled, giving Sho a bit of a look that made the older man blush slightly.

“Eh, Nino-chan? I think he went with Ohno to some super sale or something,” Aiba responded, scratching his head and looking at Sho for confirmation.

“Y-Yeah,” Sho squeaked, he then cleared his throat and spoke in a normal tone of choice, “He’s with-with Ohno-kun-now-at the sale,” he then looked away, shifting his eyes back and forth from Jun to the wall.

“Oh, that’s too bad. Um-well, Sakurai-san, do you think you could help me then?”

“Eh? Me?” Sho pointed looking quite shocked.

“Yeah, I need someone to help me move a bit of furniture. The movers didn’t put it in the right place; well, I guess I shouldn’t have cheaped out on the moving company, right?” Jun laughed a bit obnoxiously and made Aiba a bit uncomfortable.

Sho, on the other hand, was laughing up a storm, even going so far as to slap his knee like an idiot. Aiba just looked at him, like he was an idiot, and Sho immediately shut up.

Jun stopped laughing long enough to ask again, “Sakurai-san?”

Aiba answered, “Oh well, Sho-chan and I were-”

“SURE!” Sho interrupted, “Masaki and I were just watching TV anyways.”

“You don’t mind, do you, Aiba-san?” Jun asked, looking like he cared but sounding far from it.

Aiba glared at Jun but then smiled widely, and shook his head.

“Great!” Jun smiled “Come on, Sakurai-san, we need to get down to business, right now.”

Jun grabbed Sho’s arm and quickly led him away from Aiba, who stood in shock at what had just happened. Sho just shrugged his shoulders and followed Jun down the hall into the younger man’s apartment. Aiba felt a twinge of jealousy, mixed with rage, something that he wasn’t used to since he was normally such a mild-mannered, good-tempered man.

“Bastard,” he muttered to himself, but then he covered his mouth and looked around to make sure no one had heard him utter such a bad word. He sighed with relief and shut the apartment door.

After an hour of practically beating other people in order to get bargain-priced pork and cabbage, Ohno and Nino returned home with several bags around each other arms. They groaned as they went up the stairs and groaned again as they walked down the hall.

“Oh man, I forgot my key,” Nino sighed, as he felt around his pocket.

“Aiba is still here, isn’t he?” Ohno replied.

Nino nodded and knocked on the door, and was surprised when Aiba opened it quickly and shouted, “SHO-oh, it’s you two. Hi-how was the sale?” he said in an unenthusiastic manner.

Nino and Ohno looked at each other and then back at Aiba, walking in behind him without saying a single word. Once they put the food on the counter and took a breather, Nino spoke up.

“Hey-um, where’s Sho-kun?”

Aiba looked up from the magazine he was reading and simply replied, “He’s helping the neighbor move furniture.”

“Neighbor?” Ohno asked.

“Oh, you mean Matsumoto-san?” Nino said with a shocked expression.

Aiba glared at Nino but then turned away and looked back at the magazine, mouthing the words on the page as he read them. Ohno chuckled under his breath and shook his head. Nino just shrugged his shoulders and just went to put the food away.

A little while later, the three of them were sitting in the living room, bored out of their minds.

“What should we do? I’m dying here,” Nino said in a dramatic fashion, throwing his head back on Ohno’s arm, which was around his shoulders.

“Hey, let’s go and see if Sho-kun wants to get lunch with us or something. I’m starving!” Ohno moaned, as he pulled his arm away from Nino and clutched at his growling stomach.

Aiba laughed, and nodded in agreement, “Okay. I’m kind of wondering what’s taking him so long. I guess Matsumoto-san has more furniture than I thought,” he replied, scratching his head a bit.

The threesome made their way down the hallway and knocked on Jun’s door; Aiba noticed that it was unlocked and opened it.

“Hello? Matsumoto-san? Sho-chan? Where are you g-?”

Aiba stopped dead in his tracks; Nino and Ohno had a hard time seeing what was going on over Aiba’s height.

“Eh? Aiba-what’s going on?” Ohno asked, leaning his head back and forth to see. Aiba stepped forward, slowly and the other two caught a glimpse of what had made Aiba so shocked in the first place.

There was Sho, sitting on a recliner chair, with his shirt opened and there was Jun, sitting on top of Sho, his shirt open, hanging off his shoulders and his hair mussed. Sho’s mouth was wide open and Jun seemed to be a bit out of breath.

“M-M-MASAKI!” Sho cried.

Aiba didn’t say anything; Nino, on the other hand, spoke up.

“WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE?!”

Jun got off of Sho, not looking one bit guilty. Sho was struggling to get out of the chair and ran over to Aiba’s side and grabbed the other man’s hands.

“Masaki-it’s not what you think. It’s-”

Aiba pulled his hands away and without saying a single word, or erasing the shocked expression from his face, he slowly turned around and stiffly walked back out into the hallway and back to his apartment.

Nino and Ohno looked at Sho and Jun, the latter did not seem to be showing any signs of guilt or regret. Sho had red eyes and looked at Nino and Ohno.

“I just-” he tried to explain but Nino just shook his head at him.

“You-don’t get to say a word. I can’t believe you of all people would do something like this, Sho-kun. Masaki is such a trusting person and you-”, Nino stopped scolding Sho, and turned his attention to the man standing with an open shirt and messed-up hair, not too far away. Nino had a fake smile on his face, one of disbelief and ironic humor. He walked over to Jun and looked the other in the eye, despite the differences in their heights.

“You-you-I knew there was something wrong with you. I don’t trust people like you,” he muttered under his breath, his hands on his hips and his glare was frightening.

Jun smirked and looked off in the distance, “Ninomiya-san, I don’t see how any of this is your business. Please-leave my apartment before I throw you out,” he said in a cold and faintly polite manner.

Nino looked like he was going to punch Jun but Ohno quickly stepped in.

“Ah, Kazu-let’s leave before things get worse. Matsumoto-san-Sakurai-kun-I-I don’t know what to say. We’ll just leave,” Ohno smiled, while holding Nino’s arms to his side so he couldn’t move and knock Jun’s lights out.

The pair left, with Nino struggling a bit, and Ohno sighing and shaking his head. When they got back to the apartment, Ohno let Nino go and immediately the younger man made his way to Aiba’s bedroom door.

“Masaki! Masaki! Aiba! Aiba! AIBA!” he banged on the door, but he got no response.

Nino put his hands on his hips and turned to look at Ohno, “Hey, give me a credit card.”

“Eh?” Ohno sneered, replying dumbly.

“Just give me one!”

Ohno took out his wallet and gave a credit card to Nino who took it and placed it in the space between the door and the wall. With a keen eye, he managed to slide it down and jimmy open the door; he handed Ohno the card and opened the door. He looked to find Aiba, clutching his new stuffed animal and sniffling softly. Nino sighed and walked over to the bed, sitting down next to Aiba and folding his hands in his lap.

“Masaki-I’m sorry.”

“This is my fault,” Aiba whispered.

Nino leant in closer to make sure he heard right, “Your fault?”

Aiba nodded his head, and wiped his nose, “It’s my fault. I knew Sho-chan had needs but I chose not to fulfill them. I’m really a selfish person, aren’t I?” he chuckled half-heartedly.

Nino shook his head and put his arm around his best friend’s shoulder, pulling him in close and comfortingly, “It’s not your fault. Sho-kun-he shouldn’t have done what he did. If he really loved you, he wouldn’t-he wouldn’t betray you like that. He just wouldn’t!”

Aiba laughed and pulled away from Nino, turning and looking Nino in the eye, “Thanks, Nino-chan-but I still think if I had done what Sho-chan wanted, he wouldn’t have had to go to Matsumoto-san to-well, to get what he wanted.”

Aiba got up off the bed and headed out the door.

“Hey, where are you going?”

Aiba stopped and placed his hand on the doorframe, “I think I’m going to take a shower. I suddenly feel the urge to wash up.”

Nino watched as Aiba made his way to the bathroom, shutting the door behind him without saying another word. Nino sighed again and got up off the bed; he dragged his feet and went back to the living room. He sat down next to Ohno on the couch and groaned.

“Is he going to be okay?” Ohno asked, looking genuinely concerned.

Nino shrugged his shoulders, “I’m not completely sure. Masaki’s someone who doesn’t like to show people when he’s sad. He just smiles like an idiot and tells everyone he’ll be okay. It’s becoming harder and harder for me to believe him. But-I feel like I have to-for his sake.”

The younger man sighed again and leant his head on Ohno’s shoulder, grabbing his hand and rubbing his thumb over it.

“At least, I know I don’t have to worry about you,” he whispered.

“Hmm?”

Nino chuckled, “Nothing.”

The next day, Aiba still hadn’t come out of his room and once again, Nino was genuinely concerned. He sat at the kitchen counter, tapping his fingers on the tile and shaking his leg out of anxiety. He wanted to knock on his roommate’s door but he was worried that it would just lead to nowhere. Aiba would either choose not to answer or he would just pretend like he wasn’t horribly bothered by the image of his boyfriend of 6 months being straddled by the next neighbor.

Nino wanted to bust into Aiba’s room and ask him if he was okay but something stopped him. A knocking on the door caught his attention and he was quick to answer it.

“Hello-oh-” he said in a disappointed tone, crossing his arms to demonstrate his disappointment.

“H-Hello, Nino-how are you today?” asked a nervous Sho, who had his hands behind his back and his head hanging low.

“It’s Ninomiya, thank you very much and I don’t think how I am is any of your business. What are you doing here-Sakurai?” Nino replied coldly.

Sho looked a bit hurt but he was quick to pretend he wasn’t and just replied meekly.

“I’m-I’m here to talk to Masaki. I need to set the record straight about me and Jun-kun.”

“Jun-kun? Well, aren’t you a little informal? I didn’t realize you two were so close-but I guess yesterday was proof of that, wasn’t it?”

“It’s not what you think! I didn’t-Masaki!”

Nino’s heart dropped; he slowly turned around to see Aiba standing not too far behind him with a bit of a shocked expression on his face.

“Sho-chan,” the taller man gasped.

“Masaki-I came to talk to you,” Sho’s voice quivered.

Nino looked back and forth between the two men, feeling a bit anxious and a tad sick. He was unsure of what to do as he watched the drama unfold right before his eyes.

“You want to talk to me?” Aiba replied coldly.

“Y-Yes,” Sho stuttered, he looked a bit pale and was sweating profusely, “I need to tell you what really happened between me and Jun-Matsumoto-san.”
